Morning folks,

I've just put together a new build with a 4790k(at stock) with H105, in a Carbide 540 case and have noticed temperatures are idling about 30-35 and when running the new Prime 95 after about 10 minutes temperatures are hitting about 80c.

This seems quite high to me after coming from Sandybridge should I be looking at the CPU cooler?

80c is actually not too bad on a stock 4790k. Many are hitting the 90's. Its just how theese chips are. Paste instead of solder below the ihs and AVX programs like p95 which add a lot of heat

What are your temps when doing what you bought t he computer for, prime is only good for two things heat gen and calculating prime lol, also check you voltages in the BIOS some 4790's had an issue where they were being over volted (maybe they have fixed this glitch but worth a look)

I've not had a chance to play any games but will give that a go on the weekend, I think I just expected the H105 with 2 of the Noctua fans to perform better than 35c on idle.

35c at idle is grand, mine will hit the 90's under p95 but in games its high 50's - low 60's.

Below is my gaming stable settings and temps:

Motherboard
Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 7 mobo with F6 Bios

CPU - I7-4790K
4.9GHz core @ 1.380v
4.6GHz uncore
CPU VRIN Loadline Calibration: Extreme
CPU Phase Control: Extreme Performance
Ring Voltage @ 1.275v
Vrin @ 2.200v

Memory - 16GB (2x8GB)
2400MHz
10-12-12-28 T1

Cooling
H105, MX4 Paste & SP120 fans in push only
35-40 degree idle
60-70 degree gaming

Prime 95 runs for about 10-15mins and then crashes due to temp suddenly rising from 80 degree to 95-100 degree but I am not too worried about that since I haven't delided or got a custom loop at moment and case is very hot as the SLI 780's push all the heat internally.

Hopefully I can get a waterloop sorted in a month or so and we can see if the temps are any better and I will try to delid as well then.

Edit: This is also with a 750 watt Superflower PSU

Your pushing your Vrin pretty high ;)
also bump your uncore down a notch its really not needed and will add much more stability.
and remember when pushing your system if your have 2.220v vrin it will be overvolting @2.220-2.240 quite high for vrin could degrade chip/or kill it.

Yeah I am still going through the settings and just seeing what I can do.

I actually get better stability by going with the following but higher idle temps  However it should be noted that the ambient temp in my flat is around 26 degree.

Prime usually gets me at about 5 minutes, when it really loads up the system, but it got me the other day in 5 seconds :D when i tried 5.1

i'd love to have another go at 5.1 but i'd need help from you guys with the settings, because i dont know enough; this might need a new thread.

because at 5.1 the temps were quite low, i had it at 5.1 for two hours

Update: Thank you guys for all the help, my temps are a little more stable now, 29-32c idle and max about 65c.

Hoping someone can help me here, but I've just been playing a few hours of Dragon Age Inquisition and noticed my CPU temp went up to 80c. Is this normal after gaming for a few hours?

I have said this before, Prime95 or Intel Burn Test is not recommended for use on Haswell CPUs. It puts an unrealistic load on the CPU that it will never see in real world usage. This has been confirmed by Intel themselves. Use Aida64, Realbench Stress test mode or Burn In Tests by Passmark. But regardless unless you are using a decent water cooling loop or a huuuuuuuge air cooler those temps are fine.

Did you even read my last post?
