I just picked up a delidded 4790k I will be fitting to tonight and after I test the cpu I want to see what the thing can do.

What would be a run of the mill overclock? And what would be classed as a good overclock?

I have a good air cooler what would be max sort of vcore I would be looking to run.

had some fun.. turns out after 1hour of thinking i have a duf board or chip that i cant overclock with XMP enabled.

with XMP i cant get passed 4.3Ghz on all cores.
with XMP off and Vcore fixed @ 1.25v, ring offset +0.050 and ring fixed at 4.3Ghz:
4.9Ghz boots but fails all tests.
4.8Ghz boots and pass's test but BSOD in games.
4.7Ghz looks to be very stable with no crashes as yet.

tomorrow i will go upto 1.35v on the core and see with i can get stable.
but any advice of with may help with getting the ram stable would be super, ram is running at 1333Mhz and loose timings, i can set timings to those in the xmp profile but i cant get speed passed 1333mhz

right now i am stable at 4.8Ghz @ 1.325v how ever temps are now hitting 81c in stress testing
i test with asus real bench and also get the boy gaming for a few hours

Hey P4Clock. I'm also attempting to OC my 4690k on a gigabyte board. Gigabyte's EasyTune app somehow managed 4.7ghz and appeared stable but I have no idea how as I can't get to 4.6ghz without it being too hot or getting a reboot on a stress test.

I've only altered the Vcore though and not very experienced with what settings I should change. What are you stress testing with?

my setting was
ring voltage to offset +0.050
CPU voltage Vcore to fixed 1.300v
set ring ratio fixed to 40 (default for my cpu)
XMP off
Speed step to off
then go to core setting and change turbo ratio of all core to the same to get you OC so for 4.4Ghz change all to 44

I think you have found the 24/7 limits of that chip if it proves long term stable. volts and temps are fine, but I personally wouldn't want either much higher.
My experience of using realbench with my 4790k is that I can pass hours of it, yet GTA V crashes and requires a few more notches of vcore
4.8GHz at that vcore is a decent result. Probably average for the later batches, good for the early batches.

i have dropped down to 4.7Ghz as i was able to get vcore down to 1.279V, i feel the drop on volts is worth the 100mhz drop in core speed.
my CPU is unstable with XMP enabled at any core speed other than stock, however i am running 4 sticks of ram and this can be taxing on a IMC

I'm interested in this thread as just bought a 4790K. Got a cheapish cooler (Saphire) and monitored temps whilst running 3D Mark Firestrike at stock. Cores hitting around 62 already so assume need something a little beefier to get a decent oc like an AIO?

AIO coolers and no better than a good air cooler, they just cost a hell of a lot more and in my case have alwasy made more noise. my current CPU cooler is this https://www.overclockers.co.uk/alpenfoehn-brocken-2-cpu-cooler-hs-041-al.html
the cooler can be had from bgrade for £20. mine was a b grade cooler and was boxed as new fantastic cooler and well worth £20.
