4790k Overheating Issue

So I have recently completed my first build. Has worked absolutely fine for about a month however on Saturday randomly shut down. On trying to restart, I showed a CPU fan error code and stuck me straight in the BIOS, from here I could see that my CPU was running at nearly 90'C (a tad over the normal 35~). I thought it might be an issue with the cooler so I replaced the corsair h80i with the stock 4790k cooler however this seemed to prove futile :(

As it has been running fine for a month I'm really concerned that something has gone seriously wrong with the system. Anyone who could possibly help me, it would be greatly appreciated!

Specs:
CPU - i74790k
Motherboard - Asus Maximus Vii Ranger
Cooler - Corsair H80i
RAM - 8gb Corsair Vengeance
GPU - 4gb MSI GTX970
HDD - WD 3TB Black
SSD - Crucial 256GB

is nt there something in the backround running and making hte cpu run at 100% ?
check task manager.
or maybe try to safe boot.
does the cooler sit properly on the cpu ? what about paste ? too much or too less paste is bad.

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Was your system overclocked at all? try doing a CMOS reset just in case the BIOS is reading the temps wrong.

Thank you both for your replies, the cooler seems to be sitting properly on the cpu (no wiggle room but not to tight). Can't get to the task manager as u get stuck looping through the bios: cpu overheat errors.

Gonna sound like a complete noob but how do I do a CMOS reset? (new to desktops as I've always had laptops).

:)

I have the same CPU and Motherboard as you. And the same issue :)

If you look at the edge of the motherboard just beside the black PCIE socket there should be a red button. Thats the clear CMOS button.

Clearing the CMOS didn't seem to do anything (put me back to CPU fan error on boot).

Zenova, you didn't happen to buy yours from SCAN did you?

Nope I got it from OCUK.
Just to clarify - I'm not getting the CPU fan error and reboot loop, I just have crazy high temperatures.

Fans are spinning on the cooler, before this happened they would spin loudly on startup and then idle quite quietly after booting. However now the loudness continues onto the desktop.

Manage to actually boot to the desktop however, pc had what i assume to be an emergency shutdown as when i restarted the BIOS loops of overheated cpu temp started up again.

what does the cpu voltage read as in the bios. it may have gone mad if its set to auto and pumping way too much voltage through and overheating. it sounds like a genuine overheating problem if the fan is attempting to cool it down. im no expert by any means but cpu voltage and heat go hand in hand so id check that.
