Are my temps too high on my new 4790k when running prime, within a minute the temps had shot upto 83c I'm using the corsair h80, I havnt overclocked the chip but it has turbo'd itself to 4.4

Well dont these run hot anyway? if 83c is your max thats proabably not too bad but might not leave much room to overclock.

Wanna delid or are these soldered?

I usually run mine at 4.5Ghz, Corsair H100i, if I prime & max fans, my max is 60-65 depending on room temp.

I wouldn't say 83'c is that bad on a H80, although perhaps could be better..
What do you idle at?

Prime95 is the problem here, not your chip or the cooling. It's a synthetic test that puts unrealistic load on your chip...

The enthusiast line (x79/X99) and even the old LGA1155 Sandy Bridge all run Prime95 with amazingly good temps.

The problem is the way Intel have packaged the more recent IB/HW processors with too big a gap between core and heatspreader and are using TIM to bridge the gap, it's just about good enough for stock speed/volts which is taking the **** really on their 'K' series chips. IMO they took the more profitable route instead of doing it better.

I run at 4.5ghz (1.212 vcore) with a h60, quiet fan and tiny case and get about the same as you so your temps aren't great.

Are you on latest bios? This might be the problem.

As long as you're not at high volts and temps I wouldn't bother too much.

Someone on here has a 4790k in a laptop that can get to 99c and must be throttling.

83c is fine anyway but you could improve it and overclock higher.

hi Woppy,

I own the 4790K and have had the same problems as you and fairly recently. Please can you list the motherboard that you own in the thread. And also check the V-Core in the BIOS. My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z97-SOC and it had the V3 BIOS so check the version of your BIOS and post what your V-Core is on this thread. My temps were hitting the high 80's and after checking the V-Core and updating to later BIOS the V-Core got set correctly and now when using Prime95 my temps of never above 55c. Some motherboards get shipped with the early BIOS and it is possible that the BIOS you have has some settings wrong. Took me a long time to figure out my problem so hope this helps

De-lidding might be an option if you're brave? I can't get above 59c in prime these days after doing the procedure using nothing more than a lowly H80i. ;)

I had the worst chip you could imagine before sorting it out. 100c being common under load WITHOUT turbo being on.

Still, I'd imagine a good cooler and paste alone would be a good shout first if you're not having any throttling issues due to heat.

Nothing to worry about, I have a 4790k that hits 100c in prime, however never goes above 60c in video editing (for an hour at a time) or in games. Prime quite frankly sucks. I need so much extra voltage to run prime compared to rendering or gaming. If i prime my current overclock it will bluescreen due to voltage. but in gaming and editing it never will.

unless your game temps are 70+ you have nothing to worry about

It's disappointing to hear that its normal to hit over 80-90C on a 4970K. I just tested my 3770 @ 4.2GHz and it tops out at 71C in the maximum heat generation test. The cooler is an Evo 212.

I am thinking of upgrading to the 4970K but this has kind of put me off.

Stick with the 3770k, I've owned it as well as 4770k and 4790k. The performance increase between them all is pretty small. See if you can clock the chip a bit higher but use a more realistic stress test such as real bench. Temps are much lower. The 3770k while still a pasted chip is a bit cooler running than the haswell models.

I wouldn't bother upgrading to a 4790k from you have anyway but not because of temperatures.
