Hi

Second PC being used for gaming connected to a 4k tv in the living room. Also used to run a quest 2.

Got 4790k at 4600 and 16gb 2400 ram.
Would get 10400f, Mag Mortar WIFI (want wifi 6, BT, fan headers and integrated IO shield), and one 8bg stick of ram to match one I already have. Cost about 280.
Could go 11400f, B560 version of board and 3600 kit for about 100 quid more. 100 quid isn't the end of the world but I'm tight.

Would this make much real world difference? The 4790k takes an age to load stuff with the CPU pegged, but is mostly ok once it gets going.

Would be paired with a Hyper 212 EVO, 2080ti, 2 x sata ssd, EVGA550 G2 in a define R4 with 4 x 140mm fans. Probably run it at 65w.

Cheers

what do you mean by taking ages to load with the CPU pegged/100%?

Do you have your games on an SSD as that will make a big difference to load times.

I've also got a 10700k that I use for gaming and other stuff, both PCs have games stored on MX500 ssds. Taking Forza Horizon 4 as an example the 10700k loads into the game very quickly while I could go and make a coffee while the 4790k thinks about it. It's showing 100% cpu usage while loading. Other games are similar but not as pronounced. Once it gets it's ducks lined up it does ok for the most part.

Not worth it as you'll be GPU limited at 4k in most games.

There are a few games starting to emerge where having more than 4 cores, 8 threads is an advantage even a 4K. You probably won't see a huge uplift to average framerate but minimums will probably go up a lot.

Thanks both, I suspected that may be the case. I've got some time off so I'm going to give it a good workout today and decide from there. I'm leaning toward not upgrading it, I've got the newer PC that I can use for stuff that it won't run.

I've been playing about with combinations of stuff and I've decided not to upgrade the second PC. I was mostly using it for VR but that works better with the new PC and wireless now that I've set it up properly rather than plugged into the old PC.

With a 2080 ti I'd personally step up to the 10600k rather than a 10400F.

The 104 will give you a modest uplift, maybe 3-15%. With 106 (or 116) you'll be looking at a 10-30% uplift, which in my opinion is more worthwhile of an upgrade.
Honestly I'd be concerned that you'd still not be taking full advantage of the 2080 ti in all titles.

Thanks, but that's starting to go down the road of building a new system where I was considering getting more value out of stuff I already have.
I've also got a 10700k and 3090FE. I'm leaning towards putting the 2080ti back in with the 10700k and selling the 3090 while the prices are inflated and parting out the older PC less a few bits I want to keep.

I just went rtx 3070 with a 5820k to a 5600x..

Hasnt exactly set my world on fire at 1440p lol.

:) Trouble is we're now in a world of incremental updates. I broke my own rule going 2080ti to 3090 of not buying anything unless it has twice the real world performance. I like playing though . Pretty sure I have the bits to do a bitchin' Q6600 and Athlon X2 4800. Maybe I should play with the bits I have rather than add to the pile.

It's up to you my dude, for sure the 10700k would be a better fit for either the 2080ti and 3090 and a 10400F. The bottom line is whether you need 2 computers then I guess?

From what I've heard you're probably good with the 4790k+2080ti system along side the 10700k+3090 system.

I'm tending towards 2080ti and 10700k, buying a NAS and mesh router and getting out of the rest. I'm swapping parts tomorrow, we'll see.
