With just my desktop on I have got 48 Processes running. I have got AVG Antivirus and Zonealarm running (free versions) but should I have so many processes running? How do I know which ones I can turn off and how would I turn them off?

1) always use antivirus.
2) just hijackthis! to see which processes you dont need and get rid of
3) stop worrying about how many processes you have running :p

Use Google to find out what the processes do before you turn them off using control/alt/delete set priority = disable.
I am not happy unless mine are under 30, at the mo i have 26, over 40 is unnecessary clutter.

Yes, its best find out whats what really.

This a shared pc that Im using for the time being. Got 37 running here, but there is a LOT of stuff on here that I dont really use and have been put on over time. Last format must be over 18 months ago now.

Usually, my pc has about 22 or there abouts running to keep it nice and tidy. Try to make it less than that if I can.

Personally, when XP is booted up anything over 20 or so I start to clean up.

Lol,

I am running 60 process atm on win xp.

Nothing wrong with it tbh, Whats the point in quad core and a few gb of ram if you can't leave things running in the background?

Ok that was a pointless question because I know having so much causes conflicts and instablity not to mention takes ages to load up as well

making a new nlite cd for this very reason too much clutter my most recent install is less that a month old and already near 40 processes! eek!

so considering making this new cd purely for gaming down to 11 proccess on a fresh install but havent tested compatibilty

I have Windows XP with sp2
No option to disable process when I go to priority?! By hijack this, do you mean post a thread?

Right click on it dude.
My head memory is borked, i will come back with how i do it and/or a prog to sort it if knowone else posts

Does'nt really matter how long the pc has been on for.

Really you shouldnt have things opening by thierselfs over time.

Depends how much memory you have.

Only got 768MB on here, so I have to be careful.

Rigs with 2GB then you have some headroom.

38 with Winamp, Thunderbird, Firefox and WLM running. I can make it 36 by ending the ruddy PerfectDisk processes.

I have some processes running for my Bluetooth dongle. Might be a good time to check all the processes running again and sort them out. Could be doing an nLited install over the weekend.

Plus I do have 2Gb RAM so its not as bad as it could be.

48 is a little high [but nothing to worry about], but I've seen 78 on a PC .Mine is 38 at the mo . Try out that free program called what's running , it'll give you an idea of whats in the background and give you the chance to turn them off.

I just googled "that free program" but the results aren't too clear.:p Might you mean something like Process Explorer?

No I mean something like What's Running , Ive just checked my download site and it's still there , so it's still in use and very good .Heres a brief summery :

What's Running is a product that gives you an inside look into your Windows 2000/XP/2003 system.
Explore processes, services, modules, IP-connections, drivers and much more through a simple to use application. Find out important information such as what modules are involved in a specific process.
Control your system by starting and stopping services and processes. Configure your startup programs easily.

I have it on a few PC's and I can confirm it's very good.
File size is 1.1mb

[if you get stuck I can always send you a copy )
