I'm tempted to get an 8800GTS or even a GTX. I'm worried that my current 4800+ @ stock is going to be a bottleneck. What does everyone else think?

I'd imagine it would be a some sort of bottleneck, but not a big one. Am I right? Perhaps I could try and clock it a bit more to help?

Again this bottleneck talk seems to be this years in fashion.

Not all games are CPU depedant, take FEAR for example, there was a user here linked to a review showing these results.

Well, put simply, I was running a 7900GT with my 4800+ and decided to upgrade to a 8800gts 640mb. Well, even I was surprised at the difference.

Frame rates in pretty much all games leapt up, STALKER and Oblivion at 1680x1050 up 30/50%

Very happy with the difference.

Cheers, Paul.

small bottleneck, not as big as some people make out.
Goes by the game and res.....

At a low res like 1280x1024 and in some games an 8800gtx with an overclocked C2D or quad CPU can give around double the FPS compared to a 8800gtx with a stock AMD 4800 x2 CPU

I have been reading this thread with interest, as I'm in the same boat with a X2 4800 not a good OC'er and a X1900XT-X (1680x1050)

Now with the price drop next week a new C2D system and 8800 is tempting, however having read Headrats link I'm thinking I could get away with a GTS/GTX and wait untill around xmas when the next new hardware comes out?

In fairness it's only games like SupremeCommander, Oblivion and LOTRO I now have to turn the fruit down.

Hi, my old build used 8800GTS 600/1900 and 4800+ o/c @ 3Ghz, scored between 9,500/10,000 in 3dmark 06 iirc (not that its a great example, gives you an idea though). So not much of a hit on GTS but might bottleneck GTX tad more than ideal tbh. :)

I think I'm going to wait, save up a bit of money then do a system overhaul when I REALLY need it. I know Flight Simulator X, which is what I was getting the upgrade for in the first place is really nasty on the CPU, so I might just get a Q6600 later on and save up for a GTX.
