480GTX SOC Problems

Hey guys, I recently purchased a 480GTX (Gigabyte 480GTX Super Overclock) as an upgrade from a 280GTX (BFG 280GTX OCX) and have yet to get it stably running with my computer (fans spin at 100% with no picture).

I'll list my specs at the bottom, but the bottom line is 280GTX works fine - as soon as I switch in the 480GTX - no picture... but the computer seems to go past the BIOS and windows (Chassis fans speed down according to the BIOS & takes a while to shut down when I hit the power button aka its on the windows desktop).

After hours of checking all the connections (PCI-E 2.0 ports / PCI-E 6/8 pin connectors/DVI Cable) I took out the RAM all together and tried one stick at a time in different ports - eventually I got a picture with just one stick - Was able to play crysis 2 solidly for a few hours, and did a FurMARK benchmark.

However as soon as I restarted my computer, it went back to not showing a picture and I've yet to get it to work again with any RAM combination. I ran multiple memtests on the RAM and found no problems.

I've updated all my motherboard drivers and BIOS and have a more than capable Coolermaster 850Watt PSU. If ANYONE has any idea I'd be eternally greatful!

No disrespect meant.

but... a lot of others have been having problems with this particular card as well!

Have a look further down this sub-forum and you will see other threads about this particular card.

Did think about one myself. rather glad that I didn't in the end.

If possible. Try it in another PC. And if stil FUBAR, then it's RMA time.

Sorry...

Cheers for the fast reply, and don't worry about! I took a look through a few pages before I posted this thread and couldn't find anything? But thats probably just me being blind.

Was the problems on this exact same make?

Ah I see.. looks like a very dodgey card indeed.. I think I'll go ahead and RMA it asking for a refund if possible, might have to stay away from this special "cherry picked" kind of card.

Is there any SOLID and STABLE makes you guys can recommend? As my first experience with Gigabyte has not been a good one!

I had one of these that went back for a refund for buzzing capacitors. Other than that, it was perfect :(

I don't think it's Gigabyte making poor products. It seems they just bumped up the core clock without touching the voltage as a lot of people have found that solves any issues with the card. I doubt it would help in your case though.

As for another brand, how about MSI?

would have thought that was apart of their job of making an OC card... oh well

Yeah a lot of people have been recommending MSI, I think I'll check some out.

I had a faulty 480 SOC and after sensinf back to Ggabyte I now have a 580:)
Give them another chance. However MSI are also very good.
