Is it worth paying the price difference for a 4850 with 1GB of memory as opposed to 512MB? I use a 1680x1050 monitor.

Hello SlyReaper, the performance difference between the ATI Radeon 4850 512MB and the 1GB version is minimal at best.

Have a read of this review here by Guru3D. It's not the ATI Radeon 4850 1GB graphics card but the 2GB version instead. :)

2gb version? gawd.

Flashing that to a FireGL could make for an interesting workstation card though

For an extra £12? Most definitely. If you use Bryce or Terragen etc, even Photoshop, you`ll appreciate the extra half gig. CF with similar and you`re onto a winner ;)

pencil + bios mod and watercooling

A bit disappointed actually because I got my 3850 to do 1012mhz for benching, only got to 920mhz on this 4850 :p

Will try one of those non-reference 4870s next

but yeah I didn't realize the price difference between 512 and 1gb was only 12 quid. For that price you might as well...

kudos to you, that`s an awesome OC matey! What do you get real terms, ie difference in 3D Mark from stock, extra fps from stock etc :)

Sorry to hijack yer post SlyReaper :)

thanks...

As for performance gains I'd say between 20-35% depending on the game. I have not done too many 3dmark runs as the 48xx series are really poo at it :P

well at 880mhz it should outperform it quite a bit. But the 4870 can oc sometimes to 850-890mhz without even touching the voltage, also of course it has the advantage of higher mem bandwidth as well...and that overclocks too... to around 4-4.4ghz effective

20-35% is awesome. You`ve basically got a better than a 4870 card for a lot less lolly :) Well done, you should do a tutorial ;)

actually that does sound like quite a large gain. I will do some benches in the next few days with a few different games to see for sure

Actually, you may be conservative with 20-35%! I recorded (gets calc out) about an 18% overall performance increase in going from 640/960 to 720/1100, but ya know what, the benchmarks tell me this but really, it don`t feel any different!:D

I hate benchmarks personally. Sure, they are important in respect that you have to perform them to make sure what you changed was good, but it opens up the doors of inferiority complex .... jeez, folk laughed at me when I was playing Crysis on an 8600GT (albeit an OCd version with GDDR3) @ 1680x1050. Hey, settings were at medium with a couple at high, but it played and looked damn fine! :) In retrospect, I think I retired it a wee bit early :\
