4850/4870 crossfire

Is it possible to run a 4850 and a 4870 in crossfire?

I currently have a 4850, the original plan was to purchase another in a few weeks/months time for a little boost, but given the prices of 4870's now, would the combination work in crossfire?

Also, what about a 4850 and a 4870x2 as and when they're released? Or is it unlikely?

You would only have 512mb available to any game when crossfiring, the performance would be the same as two 512mb cards i would imagine.
