Hey,

I currently have a Sapphire 4850 Toxic card and was wondering what increase there would be in upgrading to a Sapphire ATI 5770 Vapor-X? I mainly want a card that can handle 3 screens. I know I can just add a second card for the 3rd screen but thought if im going to spend money might aswell get more out of it.

Btw its 2 22" screens and a 32" HDTV.

Thanks

the performance increase won't be anything mind blowing that's for sure, you are looking at the same performance increase from the 4850 to the 4870 really, as the 5770 runs on par give or take 1-2 fps.

I take it you are running these just as separate screens not in an eyefinity configuration?

I don't know about that, I went from a 4850 to a 5770 and have had a massive increase in performance in everything. Games like MW2 and Resident Evil 5 i've noticed the most, literally double the framerates. I don't exactly know why as in theory they shouldn't be much different, but for me at least there is a ton of difference. Not to mention the much lower temperatures and cheaper electricity bill, it's a win/win :)

same here running at 1900 by 1200 resolution :) Main thing is it feels much smoother is MW2 multiplayer. It must be a much better minimum framerate imo!

I'm glad that someone else agrees with me, thanks deadkomodo. Usually someone will come in and argue that they are crippled by the 128bit bus. I think you're right, the maximum framerates are maybe 10-15fps higher than the 4850 was, but the minimum are at least double making all the games silky smooth. I'm running at 1920x1080 and the 4850 just couldn't keep up. To the OP however, these just wouldn't be powerful enough for 3 screens, you need to be looking at a 5850 at least for eyefinity.

Is there any point in upgrading from a 4870 1GB to a 5770?

Would i get much better minimum framerates?

Or should i just wait until later in the year?

your post is about to cost me the price of a new card. I currently have a 4850 and after reading this i'm buying a 5770. Cheers ! (in a nice way)

I hope it performs as well for you mate, plus i've never seen any card run as cool yet still perform. One point though, when I first got mine I wiped the catalyst and put a newer one on, but it seemed very stuttery and was dropping to really low framerates, and on top of this it kept crashing on the desktop etc. So I just thought sod it and formatted the drive, once I reinstalled windows though I was stunned how silky smooth my games were, and all of the crashing stopped. If you get the same thing, just reinstall if you've backed your stuff up, it's much less hassle in the long run.

Most modern drivers are designed to be installed on top of one another.

I know Meaker you're right, that's what I usually do. It was just for some reason this time the 5770 didn't work right at all after the 4850. Once I reinstalled windows everything was great though, bit of a pita but nevermind at least it doesn't crash all over the place now lol.

You'd probably lose about 1% in terms of performance, but you are halving the power consumption and have the option to Xfire at a later date.

This is what I have done, selling my 4870 whilst I can still get decent money for it. The 'upgrade' has cost me nothing.

You might regret that when the 5830 is released next week. Though the 5770 is still a very good card.

Bah I'm happy with the min frame-rate upgrade / lower power consumption / less noise upgrade compared to my current 4850. May even x-fire eventually.
