Was advising my mate who I'm building for, to get the 8800GTS 512 (BFG OC one), as it seems to punch a bit above it's weight.
But then these pesky 4850's came along, same price point and everything.

I can't see a comparison between the two cards in any of the roundups, but, based on the GTX scores, (and knowing how my GTX fares compared to the slightly inferior 320GTS), it LOOKS like the ATI will basically eat it for breakfast and burp noisily afterwards.

Would you lot concur?

Yep, well the 8800 GTS G92 has similar performance to a 8800 GTX which is beaten by the 4850, as is the 9800 GTX i believe.

This doesnt help me. I've been talking myself out of replacing my 8800gt with a 4850. Maybe i should call in tomorrow and get one

I've just this minute swapped my GTS for one i cant say anything other than how quiet it is, you could hear the GTS whirring away even in windows.

How are you finding the performance side of things from the GTS ? and was that a 512mb GTS ?

I'm about 60/40 not to buy one!

I'm just going to have a rag on crysis now, what i have noticed is, it doesnt seem to be shunting out that much heat just sat in windows as the the GTS was.
Mines was a 320 one BTW.

*edit*

Its a LOT faster than a GTS.

thats a bigger jump from a 320gts than from a 8800gt. I should leave it really but living 5min from OcUK can be a pain! maybe i'll wait forthe 4870 1gb

I sold my 8800 GTS 512MB G92 for a HD4850 and I've seen a nice increase in games that I play, but only from benchmarking to test. I was already getting > 60 FPS so I can physically notice the difference. I bought it so I can go crossfire at a later date when this card gets a bit old, cheaper upgrade routes :)

If you were debating 4580 vs. G92 8800 GTS then I would definitely pick the HD4850.

^if you turn up the AA and AF you will really notice the difference between the 4850 and 8800GTS

btw thanks flibby i received the 8800gts today and it was packed very well :) trust signed.

Aye that's a good point, I'm still using 4x AA, think I'll have to crank up the AA to see :)

Also ta for feedback - left you some too, and glad the card got there safely :) hope you friend enjoys it as much as I did!

Well, that seems somewhat resounding.

4850 it is then.

AND a double bonus...I get to p*** about with an ATI card without parting with any wonga, maybe I'll cure my fear and loathing for them.

I have a 19" monitor (1280x1024) and i want a new computer. I was going to get the 8800GTS G92 but i was waiting for the new Nvidia and ATi cards.

Now im really confused, do i get a HD 4850/70 or an nvidia.

I like to play with everything turned up to highest, What is the best card for my res?

Thanks

TBH at that res 4850/70 would be overkill. 8800GT will suffice.

I might be getting a bigger monitor for higher res in the future, its just not a prioirty atm. Also this machine is going to last im not getting one to have to keep changing the graphics card. Not for a while anyway.
