4850 Crashing under load

Im having what sounds like the exact same problem as you, posted about yesterday, though I asumed my issue was temps as mines getting to 100C under load..

Edit: [timko] beat me to it, thats the one ;)

Run prime95 and something Furmark at the same time to create a large artificial load. This would eliminate the game from the equation. However it does seem like a power issue.

Seems strange, you even have the efficient Brisbane stepping of the CPU, people on here have run O/C'd Q6600s and 8800GTS 512MB on the Antec Earthwatts 380W, so you shouldn't be having a problem :/

What happens if you lower the GPU clock back to the reference 4850 clocks? Just humour me :)

RivaTuner/Evga Precision (maybe on ATI cards) ATI Tray Tools/ATI Tool should all work fine.

What spec PSU do you have daryll, out of interest? Also, what version of catalyst drivers?

Sorry should have said originally, was a bit of a rushed post :)

Im using a 500w OCZ StealthXStream and Catalyst v9.6 so I dont think powers the problem.

Im ordering an S1 to try and sort out the temps (im hoping thats the problem) yours is nowhere near 100C so may be a different issue, I am getting the same black screen/lost signal though.

Trying to install the ATi Tray Tool Happy, but windows 7 rc-1 is not allowing the low level driver to run as its not digitally signed. I'll see if google throws up a fix.

Try the latest RT then, however I got that driver message with RT too and found that RT 2.11 works fine on either Vista/Win7

If your getting a screen displaying vertical lines of 2 differing shades of the same colour when it crashes/freezes it's a known problem with some of these cards (xxx edition) - read this thread - link

Download furmark and run it a few times - if it replicates the same crash screen you probably have the same problem that i and others had with the XXX edition.

So does the system just act like the power cable has unplugged, just resets itself, or does the video signal to the monitor just die and you're left with the system still running why having nothing on the screen?

Well that doesn't sound like a power issue, it sounds like either it's clocked to high and crapped out (which it hasn't since you have lowered the clocks) or it's overheating and crapped out. Again the load temperatures you are reporting are fine. Do you have another PC to test the GPU in? Or another PSU to rule out a power issue?

green screen with vertical banding.

That's the one i was describing - it sounds like exactly the same problem:

a screen displaying vertical lines of 2 differing shades of the same colour when it crashes/freezes

I too had black screens occasionally- contact OC's if they reproduce the fault in Furmark they'll replace the card in under 72hrs (if not too busy)

EDIT: I opted for the Asus glaciator as a replacement to eliminate getting a similar card.

Plec, was it this random for you?

Yes, but only in certain apps/games. (Crysis would crash with similar screen - Farcry 2 seemed ok - odd, i know)

However, Furmark failed each and every time. This is the test i got OC's to run to confirm the fault.

I think the card was in their test rig for all of 2 minutes...

If yours does the same it's an easy rma. If it doesn't - i'm sure they'll replicate the error eventually if you direct them...

Ah good that the issue has been tracked down, at least my earlier prediction of you having ample power stands :D

Ran crysis 32bit for about 10 minutes on medium settings 1920*1200 - no problems.

Don't read too much into this - i could sometimes play Crysis for up to 30 minutes before the card remembered it was actually b*ggered.

Does it consistently crash in Furmark? If it does that's your 'leading' rma test - don't worry about anything else.

So is it an issue with the VRAM voltages plec, what were your final conclusions.

Well, i had 4gig of ram that was throwing up errors at the same time so i didn't really stop to analyse the probelm in great detail. Because i could replicate the problem consistently I knew the rma wasn't going to be an issue - so applied very little thought to it after that.

However, on reflection - it sounds and looks like a VRAM issue as, like your card, my GPU temps were fine - infact mine were very cool.

Refund and get the 4870 at £110 if you can afford it - link ;)

If not, i've found the ASUS Glaciator a great card. It clocks very well but it is noisy.

I have made a couple of profiles via ATi CCC: one for general usage where the fan idles at 20% and thus is silent plus the card is underclocked. The other for gaming - card is heavily clocked and fan is set to default - 50% idle speed - and noisy - but not noticible when gaming.

I haven't ran FurMark in years so I can't quite remember...

Was there an option to run it either windowed or fullscreen? If so, how are you running it when it black screens on you?

Not wanting to hijack the thread but after all this talk of rmaing and furmark i decided to try it mine, it lasts for about 5 mins, temps rise up to around 93C and then I loose signal from the card and have to reset, does that sounds like a case for rma?

I was going to get the S1 but if its not temps im asuming ocuk will be less likely to take it back once ive removed the hsf..
