4850 Crossfire performance issue

Hi all,

Recently added a second 4850 to my set up (see below) aqnd other than a 4 grand jump in 3d mark 06 (from 14,000 to 18,050), I cannot notice any performance increase in Crysis. Does Crysis not benefit from Crossfire (read several threads which seem to indicate it does) and if it should then I would welcome some input on how to get the 2 cards running better.

Native resolution is 1680 x 1050. Only seem to be able to get consistent frames above 25 (minimum) @ 1280 x 1024 and medium settings. Surely these should be doing better than that? Fraps shows something like min 17, maximum 38, average 26 @ native res and medium. Seems a bit pants to me. What do you think?

Set up:

Asus Maximus Formula x38
Go stepped Quad Q6600 overclocked to 3.2Ghz
4 gig pc 8000 Reaper ram
2 x Powercolour 4850 GPU's
ETC, ETC, ;)

Thanks in advance

Should be miles better than that are all your drivers cleaned properly >?

Crysis doesn't work very well with CF, does it?

Works fine for me

1680*1050 CF4870's

All High No AA - 43FPS (1X4870) 40FPS (CF 4870's)

All High 4XAA - 35FPS (1X4870) 38FPS (CF 4870's)

All Very High No AA - 27.8FPS (1X4870) 32.1FPS (CF 4870's)

All Very High 4XAA - 23FPS (1X4870) 31.1FPS (CF 4870's)

Crysis does work with crossfire but the performance gain seems linked to CPU speed.

With a 3.2ghz AMD x2, crossfire or no crossfire i got constant ~ 40 FPS on all high settings (DX9), my mates rig with a Q6600 And crossfire 4850's, processor OC'd 200mhz more then your own, is getting ~ 51 FPS Crossfire, or 42 FPS singlecard. On my new Procrssor/mobo (going from the amd above and 8x 8x Crossfire, to Intel E8400 and 16x 16x crossfire), with proc at stock speeds, i get ~45 FPS singlecard, and ~55 FPS Crossfire.

As for othergames, like quakewars .. or CoD4, regardless of which procrssor i used crossfire seemed to bump my FPS up by just under double that of a single card.

Check your PCIe slot speeds - the second slot has a nasty habit of deciding to run at x1 which genuinely crucifies your performance. You can see this on the motherboard tab of CPUz.

ok thanks all. I'll check out CPU-Z and report back.

One thought though - would I have got the increase in 3d mark 06 if the second slot had dropped to 1x speed? Seems odd that the increase is recorded in 3d mark but no benefit in Crysis!

;)

Further to my last post, I've also just noticed a problem when trying to run COD4 via Windows XP. On booting from eirther auto run on insert of disk, or via desktop icon, the game intro movie flickers on briefly then iconises to the toolbar. When clicking on the toolbar item a black screen pops up briefly and then iconises again whilst the sound continues to run normally

Any ideas on this one chaps? Might just revert to my trusty old 8800 GTX at this rate

Have a good mess about. I've never used Crossfire in my life but my m8's two 4870s are flying along in CoD4 with one install using the hot fix drivers.

I would be wanting to get the cards I have just bought working other than giving up and going back to a card that is slower than a single 4850, never mind two of them.

Driver Sweeper is really good it's on Gurn3d somewhere LoadsaMoney is good with links :D
Make sure you use it in safe mode or it might not un-install drivers properly

Thanks chaps. Cleaned things up with driver sweeper and checked PCI lane speed. No issues there now.

Still no performance gain in Crysis whatsoever but COD 4 is flying at 20 inch native res and most eye candy on. FPS through fraps showing average of 130+. Phenomenal!

Sadly not for Crysis but I thought I had read elsewhere (legitreviews rings a bell) that Crysis didn't receive any gains :O(

Thanks again guys anyway ;)
