4850 crossfire

Hi i already have an ATI 4850 1gb version, i wanna go crossfire in the future after i buy a new mobo, my question is will a 512mb version of the 4850 work in crossfire with the card i have now?

Will work fine, but you'll be better off with another 1gb, as if you use a 512mb, then thats all the memory you will have i think, as you always lose one cards memory, and it defaulting to the lowest amount you have when different memory sizes are used, so get another 1gb to still have 1gb.

A 512Mb will be fine, but your 1Gb card will only use half of its memory. From my understanding both cards memory are used, so 2 512's in crossfire will have 1gig of memory, 1 512 and 1 1024 will also have 1gig of memory, but 2 1024's will have 2gig available.

Just make sure you have a 64 bit operating system if you go for 2 1gigs in crossifre, otherwise the maximum system RAM that can be used is 2gig (probably less than that). I might be wrong on this, but thats my observation and understanding as I had 3.4Gb (of my 4Gb) usable when I had a single 512Mb 4850 then when I added another it dropped to just over 3gig (strange drop though).

Anyway, yes it will work but only act as if you have 2 512Mb 4850's.

The 4850 with 1 gig will work in conjunction with another 512mb 4850 but it will only use as much VRAM as its lowest one. So in essence you won't be using the 1gb version to its fullest. The total amount of accessible VRAM will be 512mb.

Not quite but i was jw lol anyways thanks for the answers everyone, and yes i have vista ultimate x64 so all the memory should be seen.
