4850+ On its way.

Pre overclocked cards are just and excuse for money from people who dont know how to overclock it for free! :P

What would be brilliant would TSMC offering 42nm fabrication (is it 42 or 45?) and the 4800 series transitioning early as well :)

The 9800GTX+ looks like a dangerous card for ATI, given the benchmarks and frankly, how well it overclocks. ATI really need to up the game with overclocking really, rather than locking there cards down :(

Cool news if it's true about the card though, just something extra rather than an overclock would be useful. (such as havoc physics, or independent shader control.)

LOL it really IS a fight now, I find it extremely entertaining but frustrating because you never know what new card is going to come out now!!!

- ATI says they will release high performance low priced cards
- Nvdiia laughs and releases GTX260 and 280 with hih prices
- The nvidinternet thinks ATI won't be able to keep their word
- Leaked ATI benchmarks hint at superior 4850 crossfire performance quite close to gtx 280 performance
- The nvidinternet wants more "real world" benchmarks
- 4850 comes out at cheap price high performance for price especially in crossfire
- nvidia releases 9800GTX+ and lowers prices to compete with the 4850
- 4870 benchmark leaks out showing to be only a bit slower than GTX280 whilst almost 50% cheaper
- Some members of nvidinternet question "jumping the gun" and buying the GTX280 with the new leaed benchmarks and infos that just came out.
- AMD announces 4850+ to better the 9800GTX+
- ???
- PROFIT!

Like guaranteed to overclock to 3Ghz Quad Cores?

Yes.

It's not like there's a die shrink involved which makes it vastly more overclockable than the normal 4850. In fact the article didn't even mention 4850+ just that ATI has removed oc restrictions for board manufacturers.

50Mhz is a tiny oc you can easily do it yourself. Most people are getting 700Mhz on core and that's limited by CCC.

I think they should do 2 variants of most cards ( top end ). One normal thats fine at stock clocks and one that comes with a pre fitted customer cooler with ram sinks and stuff thats designed to handle the heat from overclocks... the price hike however is probably so much that they prefer not to.

Most if not all cards can take a 10% overclock with stock coolers anyway, seeing as the card makers need a good tolerance on their products to cut down on RMA's. They cant assume every user has a nice cool case and a nice cool room :p

yes and happily the cutomers ( us ) are the winners this time round. Unless you did jump the gun and bought early of course

It's nice to see nVidia and AMD taking eachother seriously. This is turning into a cut-throat battle for the price/performance crown. Win.

The only thing that gives me hope for ati on this one rather than Nvidia, is that the drivers for the 9800 stuff are well developed so prob near the top end of their performance, where as the 4800 series is just released running on a similar but vastly increased architecture, that has room for a sway of driver improvements :)

In it's current state, the 9800gtx+ actually looks like the better buy (as long as the price actually is very close to the 4850's). 50mhz clock is sod all...

if its going to me $30 more expensive than the regular 9800gtx which is the rumor, then it wont be close, not for a while. id expect the gtx to be around £149 and the gtx+ to be about £169 perhaps

Not unless we get raped. The 9800GTX is going to be $199 which is the same as the 4580 so expect £117 - £135

The GTX+ is $30 more so say £20 which makes it £137-£155.

Can't see why. I reckon price/performance it will be spot on.

9800GTX same price as 4850 and similar performance.

9800GTX+ better performance but another £20.

You can keep going on up the chain and say then you might as well spend another £20 or £30 and buy the 4870 which is much faster than the 9800GTX+

In theory, if you can find a 4850 for £125 then in a short while the 4870 should drop to £187.50 ish since the 4870 is meant to be $299.

I reckon that is what ATI will do when the 9800GTX+ comes out so you will have

4850 - £125 - £138
9800GTX - £125 - £138
9800GTX+ - £145 - £168
4870 - £187.50 - £210

All offering the same price/performance so you take your pick based on how much money you have/preferred manufacturer.
