Does a 4850 draw more power than a 8800GT? Is it a worthy upgrade over my 512mb 8800GT? I only have 1 PCI-E plug

The performance between those two cards is too close for anything even remotely resembling an upgrade. As such, it isn't worth discussing power draw.
If you can stretch out another £50 to £60 (assuming the 4850 you saw were around the £80 mark) then grab a 4890, use the one 1 PCI-e plug you already have and also the included 2-molex to 1-PCI-e adaptor.
