Right, so all this hubbub has got me excited, especially with the scaling of 4850s in CF.

My mobo is rather limiting though.

I only have a 16x PCIE 1.1 slot, and a 4x PCIE 1.1 slot

I'm not yet ready for the jump to X38, so how much would the above PCIE set up hinder CF performance?

Also, aftermarket coolers are out with CF, so how noisy are the stock fans on these?

I would imagine it would hinder it quite a bit. So far it looks like PCI-E x8 x8 hinders CF performance with these new cards so I would think PCI-E 1.1 along with only a x4 lane would severely bottleneck it.

If I were you I'd scour the mm for a 2nd hand x38 board.

Also for CF there are still lots of aftermarket coolers...for example the Akasa Vortexx comes to mind :)

So I'd be better off getting a £199 4870 then for now, then get a cheaper X38 + additioanl 4870 in the months to come?

Personally, if I were in your position, instead of spending 200 quid on a 4870, I would spend like 80-100 on a x38 mobo and then scrape together enough for a 4850.

Then buy another 4850 or even a 4870 when you've got enough cash again.

there's a P5E b-grade at ocuk for 105 quid.....

By that time Nahelem will be out! :p

The wrong time to buy a S775 mobo.

All depends on the bang for buck. That is all I go for.

If Nahelem cpus and boards are as pricey as expected, no loss for me to wait a while before moving, means I score a cheap X38/X48 when other people move to it ;)

Never buy new tech, always buy best bang for buck.

Does math:

Sell Neo2-FR and 8800GT for £140ish
Buy X38 mobo and 4850 for £245

Cost to me = £105....

The question is, can my Noisetaker power the 2 new items?

i think i'll keep my board for now as it's only 6 months old and plump for a new 4870.

having been an Nvidia fan for a while now i'm intreeged as to how these will compare.
Also, when installing the ATI drivers isn't there a compatability issue with Nvidia's?
i.e. there are certain hidden files i have to delete to instal etc before the ATI accepts it all? or have i made all that up!!!!!????
