Just picked up a 2nd hand Powercolor 4850 from MM. Seems to be running a little spicy though, at base values of GPU @ 500Mhz and Memory @ 700Mhz it's running at 75 Degrees idle and 82 degrees with load. Seems to be fairly hot? Using stock cooler. I've tried changing the fan profile to 40%, doesn't seem to have made much difference.

The fan profile @ 40% should make a significant difference to your idle temps - what did yours drop to?

I found anything above 30-35% too loud for idle though.

My Gainward is exactly the same - was idle at 75 degrees. I've installed an Accelero and Turbo Module and now it's 27 degrees idle :cool: Third party coolers make a HUGE difference. I'd actually be worried about using it on the stock cooler for long at those temps.

Mine also idles high at around 72 degrees. At the moment i dont put it under much load but hoping to do abit more gaming soon. The cpu idles at 16 degrees, system at 25 and pwm at 35, so its definately not because the system is hot. How do people recommend cooling them? What does changing the fan profile mean? Is that a physical change of changing the fan blades?

Another question i have (which i may need to start a new thread for) is that i clicked on the "Auto Tune" which has set me up with a GPU Clock speed of 780 Mhz and Memory Clock of 1090 Mhz. This made a significant difference when playing a demo of Crysis, but under the "Current Clock Settings" is says that the GPU is only set to 500 Mhz? Does it adjust this as and when it needs to or is it a bug in the software not showing or setting the values correctly?

Thanks and sorry for the newb questions!

GPU Clock speed of 780 Mhz :confused: u sure thats a 4850?

Right, installed GPU-Z and found the problem. Although I had changed this bit :-

<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="50" />

it wasn't altering the fan speed. I had to change this to manual rather than automatic.

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />

Makes quite a lot of difference! Idle temps dropped to 53 Degrees. Fans quite noisy though :/

On the 4850 at least, there is a big jump in sound levels between 35% and 50% fan speed on the stock cooler - yet 35% was inaudible to me while still giving a big drop in idle temps.

So play around and try some lower fan speeds for idle until you find a noise/temp balance you like.

Windle, sorry to be a grouch but this subject has been discussed to death the previous one month, it's really not a problem and can be dealt with either by doing a simple software hack that speeds the fan up or you can add a third party cooler.

Use the search, it works rather well and stops the same topic being posted again (and again and again).

And if you read the thread you'd see that answers already been given so instead of you having to post this again and again why don't you read a couple of the answers and save yourself the effort.
