Im currently running a CF 4850 setup which i got on release and its been working fine, temps have never been really too much of an issue and both cards used to just touch 80 degrees on load (Reference cooler).

Now for no reason card 2's shutting down due to heat (Reaches 130 degrees :O) even with 100% Fan speed.

The fan on the cooler's working fine, and ive tried an aftermarket cooler this week too and the problem persists.

Any idea what can be causing it? pretty sure its dead but .. why did it happen so suddenly?

well ive tried both cards alone now.

Non problem card - 79 deg load
Problem card - 127 deg (And shutdown)

GPUZ shows the following which i believe is the issue:
GPU TEMP (DISPIO) 121 deg
GPU TEMP (MEMIO) 126 deg
GPU TEMP (SHADERCORE) 129 deg

These are on the back of the card right? or thats just the 4870?

Either way, got a new 4850 thismorning, if i can get it working then all the better.

I'd look more at the vcore if GPUZ reports that on the 4850 ?

If that's gone high something has gone very wrong! otherwise check the cooler contact...other than that, I think it's game over !
