It takes up about a slot and a half with the fans mounted so about 2 and a half slots in total for the card/cooler/fans. Have a look in here.
 
Wouldn't like to try it. These cards seem to put out a fair bit of heat. From the other thread you'll see that the T-rad does a great job of cooling the GPU and memory but it's pretty poor at cooling the VRMs. Even with the fans people are hitting over 100C under load. That's for a 4870 but I would imaging the 4850 would be similar.

EDIT. Just looking at the stock cooling on the 4850 the chips at the end of the card don't seem to be covered at all. Different layout from the 4870 so maybe heat here isn't such an issue. Still wouldn't rist it without fans though.

If running passive then would have thought the accelero s1 is a better bet. It is larger and there is more space between the fins to allow air to pass through them. Also the way the fins are running in parallel with the card would help airflow. T-rad pulls ahead though with fans.
