4850 X2 - performance

Hi guys

Bit of a quandry. Been playng away on my new 4850 X2 with relatively few problems, though I can't play most games on max settings.

I notice the different reveiws on Tom's Hardware where it said along the lines of

"it hard to recommend anything over the 4850X2 for performance"

forward two months to the weeks PC gamer - who give it 65%!

Seems to be based on the fact that:

- it runs crysis at 33FPS (thought it was optimised for Nvidia, so is that a fair benchmark?
- They had trouuble getting the 2nd "card" to work

My question is:

How can I tell whether both "cards" are working for all games?

Sorry for the most basic question ever.

:)

Crap review from PC Gamer tbh, not to mention many months too late...

Maybe they are judging the card at current prices? When it was released it was good value, but not anymore (based on general prices).

According to your, oversized (max should be 4 lines), sig you've got the 1Gb versions of the 4850x2. What this actually means is that each of the 4850 has 512Mb of VRAM each rather than 1Gb each. As such, if you're trying to max out all the settings on a resolution of 1920 x 1200 above then that's where the problem is.

However, since your sig doesn't include your monitor then the above is only a guess. If you're running 1680 x 1050 or below then you should be expecting great things with a reasonable amount of AA and AF thrown in, although not too much of it :)

Changed my sig (thinks for pointing that out.)

Monitor is 24" so 1920 x 1080 needed really..

Are certain games designed to run on "x2" cards and other aren't?

I know, but you need to make your decision at some point and if Tom's hardware tells me it's the best card on the planet bang for buck in April then who am I to argue?;)

Sure, in April it could be easily considered the best BFB. Zoom forward to June though and things have changed considersably.

If you're trying max AA and AF at that resolution then you shouldn't really be expecting too much in the way of solid 60fps for example. As mentioned before, it's the 512Mb per card that is still limiting you at that resolution.

It's not a case of if games are developed with X2 support but rather crossfire support, whether it's two (or more) separate cards in crossfire or two combined together into one like your X2.

I've not run crossfire before myself but apparently you get some kind logo appearing on the screen informing you that crossfire is enabled for the game you are running. That way you can tell if it's supported or not.

What games are you trying at the moment that aren't impressing you? :)

tbh games are pretty great considering the rig I had before, but I always want more FPS if I can ;):D

It was just that the review in PC Gamer said the drivers were flaky and they weren't sure if both cards were working for all games. I'd just like to make sure that was the case somehow.

Thx

PS - I'm keeping the AF to about X2 only
