I have a saphire ati 4870 512mb card:

I was giving the Crysis Wars trial a go yesterday, and when i'd finished playing I went into Catalyst Control and checked the temps. I was surprised to see a reading of 98 degrees C . Now during play i noticed the fan on gfx card spinning up intermittently. However the game played fine no artifacts etc. Is this high temp normal? I'm aware that these cards do run hot, and have not been using any fan speed tweaks. Oh and the card isn't overclocked at the moment.:)

you need to flash the bios to give working fan control. All of them do that without a flash to the asus bios, pretty shoddy work by the ATI partners.
But he said he heard his fan spin up and down during gaming indicating the fan control is working.

I think that 98C is a 'normal' temperature for a 4870 but maybe someone who has such a card can confirm?

I can't say whether thats a safe temp or not, but I have a Sapphire 4870x2 2GB and that idles at anything between 75c - 87c... although at load (i.e. crysis) it doesn't seem to go much higher (but my fans do kick in as soon as thats booted).

Thats one of my cores, the other core idles at 56c, so much cooler... but I don;t think you have much to worry about, they do seem to run hot these cards.

my 4870 runs hot on default fan settings 80-90ish if you install the 8.10 drivers which arent offically released yet but are apparently the final version you can increase the fan speed i have mine on 30% and temps dont go above 65c.
These cards are designed to run hot over 100c so i wouldnt worry too much
My fan spins up to max sometimes at random times, im sure these cards are susposed to do this though

What about buying a Vantec spectrum and placing it underneath the GFX card? They are only about £10 I think. I used to have one in my case to help with heat issues I was having on my 6800 Ultra a few years back.

ive had one and they are extremley loud even on lowest setting

A quick fix i did on a 8800gt(same kind of cooler) i took the cover off the cooler, the part that would say giabyte on for example, then fitted a 120m fan on a backing plate(glued it on) and put it in a slot direct under the card so it was blowing air direct on the heatsink part of the cooler, took my temps down fro 80's too 45 idle.

Install Cat 8.10 drivers from guru3d.com. Go into the ATi overdrive part of CCC and set manual fanspeed to 45%. For me, I find this a good point between the fan being too loud and keeping temps at a good level. Obviously adjust to your own needs. :)

Then in Windows I run about 25-30% and it keeps the card around 57ºC. :D

if you dont want to install drivers until there properly out try using riva tuner to up the fan speed.

I use it when i game with my 3870x2 i put it at 50% and it stay nice and cool then just turn the fan control off when i'm not gaming. i know this is a feature of the new drivers anyway but i'm holding off until ati release them properly.

as said above install the new 8.10 drivers , go to over drive an adjust ya fan speed to what suites u ,

i have mine set to 35% in windows temps hold @ 48deg clocked @780/1090 .
when i play say cryisis i wack up to 45-50% for it to hold @ 58deg

it dose make a differance an it`s about time ati gave us this feature in the CCC in stead of fannying around with ini files ;)

also u might wanna look at ya air flow thur u`re case move cables out the way clean any fans an filters

just did mine this wkend u`d be amazed how much ya case likes to knit woolie jumpers ;)

ohh yeah i have a Sapphire 4870/512 aswell ..

I've just received a Antec Spot Cool from ocuk today (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SY-000-AN) and I'm gonna whack that in and place it directly under core 1 of my 4870x2 and see if it brings temps down a bit. Gonna try my best to direct the flow from outside, to the spot cool then on to the gpu.

I'll post if my temps drop from 87c, and by how much... you may then consider buying one of these.

Had the same problem with a Sapphire 4870, checking temps with Everest showed all 3 temp readings for GFX @ 103,104,107

New card is way cooler and even on 100% the Asus fan is nowehre near as loud as the stock ones

Can't ATI Tool or something control the fan speed more intelligently?

I find with the official 8.10 drivers auto fan control now works better than ever. At idle I hit 55 degrees and 26% fan, running furmark for 15 minues sends it up to 65 degrees and 36% fan. IMHO 45% fan is way too load for a 4870
