4870 512mb @ boiling point!

Im curious, does this look normal to you guys ? (This is idle)

When i ran with furmark, it seem to top out at about 99c with 73% fan speed.

My x2 runs at 86c idle, so to me thats good :)

After gaming though, it drops down to 60c, cos the fans kick in. Setting manual speed isn't ideal either, although its gret to get my temps down in Vista, when I run games the fan wants to stay at that speed, so when it gets a little hot the fan kicks to bout 70% to cool the card down so it can retrun to my pre-defined speed... this isn't ideal cos when these fans kick to 70% they KICK to 70%, and its loudddd!

I don't know how to tell the card to do auto on gaming, and manual in Windows... I want it to work exactly as it does on auto in gaming, cos that isn't too loud and keeps the card cool, but I want manual override in Vista.

I'm using cat 8.10's and got rid of the CCC.

I'm using rivatuner with manually defined, auto fan control for my 4870.

40C = 10%
50C = 25%
60C = 45%
70C = 60%
etc

Usually hits high 60's which isn't bad and 45% fan speed does a good job of cooling without being too loud.

Aha! So Rivatuner allows you to nicely controls the fan speed according to its temp? Perfect!!

That's pretty sweet! I'll have to use that too then. Cheers for the heads up :)

Thanks for the ideas chaps. I've been giving the latest riva tuner a go and it does improve temps somewhat for gaming.

Cheers

Mine is never more then 45 Idle at 20% fan speed. You should try enabling manual fan control and moving the slider around a bit to find a decent point. The only other reason I can think why your temps are so high is that you have poor case cooling?

Nicely no, it's still a bit of a black art.

All you do is go to Power user tab, find Riva Tuner \ Fan and click the + sign, set AutoFanSpeedControl value to 3.

Now you can manually change temperature values and fan speed values in the fan tab of low-level system settings.

You got a screen shot or two to put that into context?

Yeah please post a pic. How do you get fan speeds lower than 25% in Riva, the slider wont go down any further?? Also i notice after i setup some fan profiles, that every few minutes or so the fan will speed up for a second and then slow do to its defined speed, any ideas??

There's quite a few more values than that you need to tweak according to the guide I read on it. Implementing it I found it worked but wouldn't stay after a reboot even with the stay after reboot setting checked.

I hope this clears things up a little bit.

Also, if you scroll down further on the right hand pic you will see 'T min' and 'Spinup Time'. I have my minimum temp at 40, not that if ever goes that low, and if you set spinup time to 0 it won't do that annoying spin up to 100%.

This must surely be of interest to a lot of ATI users?

Weird, I set my fan to 35% and it never goes higher than 60.

I've set mine up as the following:

- 1°C to 54°C Fan 25%
- 55°C to 64°C Fan 35%
- 65°C - 100°C Fan 40%

Whilst in games it ramps up to 35% fan speed and is switching back to 25% most of the time, mine runs extremely cool considering all the post's people have been making saying that they run 70/80 idle and 90+ Load.

Thats pritty much what i have my fan values at, makes me wounder my they decided to add such a high rpm fan, when i cant think you'd ever need it going above 50% speed, at 40% under 99% usage my temps never go above 64c.

How did you change the values for the auto settings, in the right hand pic, also i cannot find the 'T min' & 'spinup Time' settings in the list???
