I'm using cat 8.10's and got rid of the CCC.
I'm using rivatuner with manually defined, auto fan control for my 4870.
40C = 10%
50C = 25%
60C = 45%
70C = 60%
etc
Usually hits high 60's which isn't bad and 45% fan speed does a good job of cooling without being too loud.

When i ran with furmark, it seem to top out at about 99c with 73% fan speed.
Aha! So Rivatuner allows you to nicely controls the fan speed according to its temp? Perfect!!
Nicely no, it's still a bit of a black art.
All you do is go to Power user tab, find Riva Tuner \ Fan and click the + sign, set AutoFanSpeedControl value to 3.
Now you can manually change temperature values and fan speed values in the fan tab of low-level system settings.
You got a screen shot or two to put that into context?

Weird, I set my fan to 35% and it never goes higher than 60.
I've set mine up as the following:
- 1°C to 54°C Fan 25%
- 55°C to 64°C Fan 35%
- 65°C - 100°C Fan 40%
Whilst in games it ramps up to 35% fan speed and is switching back to 25% most of the time, mine runs extremely cool considering all the post's people have been making saying that they run 70/80 idle and 90+ Load.
