I am at somewhat of a dilemma. I'd really like to get my dirty mitts on a 4870 (or a 260, depending on the prices), but with money being tight and all that, my options are limited to the 512mb version. I have a 24" monitor, will the card struggle with 1920x1200? I've heard that to run 1920 and above you really need 1gb of RAM, just wanted to see if I'd be shooting myself in the foot

You'll see biggest improvement with a 1GB at resolution 1920 or above, although the 512MB should still be able to handle 90% of games at that res. If you know where to look, there's currently a brand new Sapphire 4870 512MB for £163 in VAT...

My advice would be that if you are tight on cash, safer bet is the GTX 260 (192 or 216) with 180.43 drivers.

The 260 looks good on paper, but it'd limit any upgrades I'd want to do. I have an Intel board, so SLI is out of the question, which makes this a last resort really. How much of a difference would 512mb on a 4870 make? Bearing in mind I'm using 2 3870s atm so basically anything is an upgrade =)

Hi Mojo,
Don't know if this will help you decide (I'm neither biased in favour of ati or nvidia - I think they are both great).
I've recently upgraded from a knackered xfx 8800gtx to a powercolour extreme (overclocked) 512mb 4870. So far what ever I've thrown at it its been able to handle with no trouble trouble at all. However, I was limited for funds and would recommend a 1gb card for a little more future proofing but it still runs farcry 2 quite easily, everything to the max with AA off, getting about 55 fps at the very highest at the moment. Hope this helps a little.
