I got £200 quid burning hole in my pocket. wondering if its worth waiting for the 1gig version or just getting the 512mb, 512mb seems far from enough vram for me under such a res.

I have an abit p35 pro so xfire 2x512 versions is out the question.
current card is a 8800gtx and it struggles a bit on cod4 etc at 1920x1200 with 16xaf and and a small amount of aa 2x is enough for me to see no jaggys.

currently im have to play the game at 1680x1050 to stop the splutters.

O and i dont want to waste the £200 if its not going to give me the perfection im after.. ill wait for 4870x2 to settle in price, the 1gig version to drop, or get a 280 as this should cope np ?

Set AA to Application controlled in the NV panel, then set to X4 in game. You should be getting smooth gameplay with an 8800GTX especially if its OCed, and if it isnt.....WHY. But to answer your question, VRam helps with higher resolutions and those with 8800GT(S)'s found out when playing games like STALKER for instance.
Cant you find any Benchmarks?

I am in the same predicament. While i have seen results from games running @ 1920x1200 with decent levels of AA, and the results have been great, 512MB does not give me enough confidence for the future. Especially when coming from a 768MB card myself.

I would like to see a more of a choice of 1GB 4870's.

yer ive done all that, i spent a whole day the other week trying to get it smooth at 1920 it just doesn't. :( I also had a 8800Gt and found out the hard way at high res it did start to come to a stand still.

Played through COD4@ 1920x1200 4xAA with no issues at all(when i got the drivers sorted) Using a 512mb 4870:D Only game i can't max out is crapsis, but we all know that anyways

By the time this card struggles,i'll be on the next gen of cards anyway;)

I have np on single player its online when it starts to stutter, bad news as im normaly dead when it stops spluttering.

Check the reviews of the 4870, 512mb is no problem for it at that res with AA as ATi cards have better texture compression than Nvidia, the 4870 actually beats the 1gb GTX 280 in some at that res with 4xAA. :D

The 512Mb card has no problems. But, depending on the time-scale.... will we see the 1Gb cards soon (sorry I haven't been keeping up). If so, I'd hold off and wait for a review as you know they'll do a comparison against a 512Mb card. If there is an increase then get it, if not, you've not lost anything mate. :)

Thank you for that, looked at some benches after what you said seems your correct. Guess this is due to the gddr5 over nvidias crude huge bus 1gig of gddr3 combo

DNA 8.6 betas, get them from guru3d.work great for me. The Official 8.7s gave me stuttering problems & allsorts of hassle

The 8.6B version? could you give a link to them as the ones I found don't list 48xx as supported!
