4870 and ASUS bios

I flashed the asus one and not had a single issue with 8.8's- good fan profile as previously means i'll be sticking to this for a while!

i kept getting black screens and the fan spinning at 100% and needed to reboot to fix it,happens with both 8.7s and 8.8s so i flashed it back yesterday and not one black screen since.

BUMP old thread but you guys might be able to help me.

I had the Asus bios which was fine before. Long story short i did a lot of tinkering and playing around and ended up flashing from this bios to another I made in RBE and then back again (flash was successful but values didnt change on the card on my RBE bios) However, even after flashing back my original overclock (840/1075) will freeze on 3dmark 06 (barely makes it to the 2nd scene), vantage it got to end of first scene, started artifacting and then crashed. Both always ends up with a black screen and "pinstripes" down it. Even lowering my overclock still does the same. However, stock values complete the test.

Any idea's why flashing between 2 bios's could do that? Not only losing my overclock that was stable but lowering it causing an issue as well?

Have completed removed ccc and drivers, DC sweeped it, reinstalled, reflashed bios all sorts and still no go :(

Reckon i have nuked my card? Thats all i can think but then again why would stock work...

Try another Bios, try the Asus one again or is that what ** using now? A bios overclock should not decrese overclocks!!.

its currently got the asus one on it. Will try the stock settings for that (825/925 by default?) and also that diamond one i have just seen.

As it was artifacting it could also be a heat issue, will get a couple of fans over the VRMs just in case its that and retest.

Just really strange that 840/1075 has been flawless before and after flashing back to the asus one its stopped working on that :/

was using stock before and was fine - switched to the vortexx neo for the sexy blue lights (goes with my watercooling and lighting design). In actual fact this could co-incide with the change of coolers as i did this yesterday and thats when i started getting the problem - However, my temps are down from the stock cooler and i used AS5 on it (only TIM i got at the mo)

Also to note is that I went to increase the overclock without testing the card at the settings it was previously on (840/1075) but didnt think it would be an issue as the temps were already lower than before!!?!

What are the temps?

An accelero 2 with 2 blue lit up 120 or 92mm fans would have better better.

Are the VRM's properly cooled? Have heatsink on?

yeah i know - went for the short term as planning to add the gfx card into the loop eventually :)

idles mid 50's goes upto mid 70's max when benching. I didn't think I could get heatsinks onto the VRM's as the cooler covers them?? Not at home to check (gotta do something at work! ;)) but will be home bout 5:30ish

You reckon its a heat thing or the flashing of bios's? My bios flashes have always worked but the bios i made via RBE loaded fine, but no settings changed, changed back to asus one and thats when i noticed this issue. I even loaded the default 4870 file from techpowerup and started completely afresh but same issue.

Sounds like heat to me more i type lol

Might be heat

With the modded bios with higher voltages it must have higher voltages as my temps get higher, with side of case off its idling about 43 atm, with it on thats about 45 idle but with the fans higher, maybe 48, max temps usually about 56-60.

My temps aren't that far off yours and scale nearly the same as yours (just mine slightly hotter throughout)

Regarding the VRM's - any idea? For a quick test i will dump a scythe 1600rpm fan on top of the gfx card

Dunno, they need good cooling, my temps where hitting 100+, now they are like 40-45 idle and hit between 70 and 90 load.

current the core is at 845/975, 41 idle, temps for the VRM are 40,41 and 43, load they get up to 60+ in some games, core is at about 55 in TDU.
