Hi guys,

ok, i've done a search and found loads of similars, but am looking for definitive here if poss.

I'm sure you'll agree the rig in my sig is not too bad.
However i'd like to overclock my 4870 and cool it down a little too.
I can't check what its usual temps are as i'm not at home yet, but thats irrelevent right now. What i'd appreciate advice on is the general method.

Riva Tuner, people say to use it to overclock and alter fan speed, but its touted as a nvidia based tuneup program.
So should i use this? If so, whats the best step-by-step routine to follow, to overclock AND try to reduce temps.

Thanks for any help. :)

i can honestly say " use the ATI overdrive tool " in CCC
there you have the ability to clock the cardand also providing you have the latest drivers you have the fan control on there too, this will allow you to increase / decrease the fan.
RIVATUNER is a cool prog as it lets you setup profiles that increases the fan when certain temps are reached.
its all a matter of what suits you, give OVEREDRIVE a go and if your not happy try RIVA.
You idealy want to move the memory dail in increment of 10mhz and use ATITOOL to check for artifacts ( yellow dots ) hwne u see them decrease by 5mhz and scan for artifacts again.
once you find your happy meduim with the memory, do the same the the core in 10mhz increments and use ATITOOL to scan for artifacts.
my sapphire 4870 is set to 800 core 1020 memory and its sweet as, using CCC fan control set permenantly at 45% and temps never reach any more than 55
im no expert but there are plenty of people in here that are, some people will tell you one thing is best and other will tell you another is best. best thing to to is read past posts on this subject, take onboard the main do's and donts and then mess about with it yourself. thats what i did
hope this helps

Either program is valid. Rivatuner is handy as it will keep a graph of temps and fan speeds so you can analysis whether your card is cool enough or you need to alter your fan speed.

Whatever you don't use CCC automatic max overclocking tool as it is far too generous.

It claimed my card was fine at 930/1100 when ATI tool was just a yellow block and crashed within 2 seconds.

I found that my max is really 839/1095.
