a friend of mine has an XFX 4870 which runs terribly loud, and by contacting XFX they offered him a 65 pound reduction on any card from a list. That list does not have another 4870, so he was thinking of putting a 4850 crossfired with the 4870, since they are so cheap, till he figures what else to do about the noise.
I've tried searching about this, but didn't come with any results.
Anyone tried this, or knows it works?

If he puts the 4850 in crossfire with a 4870 he will only get the performance of 4850 CF, due to the way crossfire works.

What other cards are on the list XFX gave him, which have £65 off?

He is offered nVidia series cards of up to the GTX295 and from ATi up to 5870.
Thing is he wants to steer away from XFX that is why he's thinking of getting a 4850(he will for free since they have it for 62pounds), and later on buy something else.

Ah, in that case I would suggest he considers going for the 4850 (or 5750 is he is offered it and the price is around the same), sells it immediately and uses the money towards a card and manufacturer he wants to go with. In the mean time he runs a single 4870.

How does that sound?

well, that's one of the options. another option is to get a 5770 and get another one for 2nd hand. Or sell it as brand new and sell the 4870 as well and get the money for a new card.
