I have a PowerColor Radeon HD4850 512MB, and it's great and all, but Crossfire has always interested me. This summer its my 21st, and my girlfriend wants to get me something for ~£150.

Having just seen the "Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail" for sale on OcUK, I was wondering if the two would work together in Crossfire well?

I've heard you can Crossfire any two ATI cards (that are Crossfire compatible) but all the example I see are 2 x 4850 or 2 x 4870, so would this mix up work? And would it work well?

<Edit> Just realised I put this in the wrong Board... but can't seem to delete it to move it. My bad!</edit>

If its your 21st in summer, surely you should wait till then for your present? 4850 prices will have likely dropped by then. I may get a second.

I dont think there is much point you getting a 4870 over a 4850, as it wont make the pair run any faster than a normal 2x4850 combination... unless you were thinking of selling the 4850 and buying another 1meg 4870 later.

I guess right at this moment its only £25-30 more than a 4850 with a decent cooler.

If a deal is only on for a week, and is going to save her a load of money, she won't care about getting it now and giving it to me then.

and is going to save her a load of money

Well its not, is it? Come this summer it will be cheaper still. :p

Edit: I've seen people claim to have crossfire'd 4870's and 4850's in the gfx card forum. Needs a post in there tbh (as you say above).
