Hey guys, I recently purchased a 4870 and the fan is constantly screeching away and is far too loud for my needs,

So I used rivatuner and dropped the fan to 25% this was perfect, nice and quiet when sleeping or browsing the internet and setting it back to auto when I wanted to play games, then suddenly last night it span up when I had it set to 25% (I wasn't using the pc at this time) and now rivatuner doesn't change the fan speed at all,

I have even tried using the ati overdrive manual fan control and nothing will change the speed of the fan,

Anyone have any ideas how I can make it shut up?

Thanks

Any help from anyone? I think I have left it long enough to bump my own thread. :p

Since making this thread I have tried the windows 7 beta and even with a format and a new operating system the fan will not respond to any tuning using rivatuner or ati overdrive,

Any suggestions?

4870 fan

I bought the Sapphire 4870 1gb,and the temps were over 60% on load, and the fan was a bit noisy, not to much,so i decided to lower the noise and temps,by putting on a S1 REV2 cooler, and 1 120mm fan on top.
it was virtually the same fittings for the 4870 512mb,except for the chip,as it didnt have the little washers, but the 4 holes were the same so it fitted okay.
Now my temps are 40% on full load, and virtually silent.
So it might help you to do the same thing.

I never had much success when trying to control the fan speed on my ATI X1950XTX with Rivatuner, similar problems to you substance. I just edited the bios so the fan speed was quiet until it reached 75C and then had the fan speed ramp up every couple of degrees. With that and flashing better 2D/3D clocks it worked like a charm, and most importantly it was quiet :)

what settings are you using on rivatuner ?

I have tried the fan at all different speed levels, it used to work fine but just suddenyl stopped working, the fan stays at 50% no matter what settings I choose

Which 4870 are you using?

The Sapphire one?

The Asus one

I am not sure if I can control gpu fan speeds in bios, I can change every other fan speed but can't find the gpu one, I am using a Biostar tpower I45

Hmm, I managed to grab the bios for my card and edited the fan details, now the weird thing is that ati CCC is repoting the fan speeds right for the temps my card is showing (40%) but the card is still whining away at 100%

should be able to control the fan speed vai CCC now my two sapphires are fine (note before that was introduced I was suing some gainwood software :P)

As said above I have tried CCC and a few other tools, even editing the bios doesn't do anything, It reports the right percentage but still sounds liek a jet, I know it shouldn't always sound like this as for the first few days I had it it was silent

Did you say you have flashed the Bios? If so did you flash the bios of a card that doesn't have fan control? i.e some fans will run at 100% regardless, since there is no speed control wire.

I know the fan is controlable because when I first got the card it was nice and quiet and only ramped up in games, I woke up one morning though and it wouldn't shut up, I tried rivatuner (which worked before) and neither that or all the methods mentioned above worked

What I meant is some card's fan speed can't be controlled, and if you flashed you bios to one of these card's bios, then you wouldn't be able to control your fan speed. However if you haven't done that, then is there a default override for fan speed for 3D and 2D or something? otherwise I'm out of ideas :/

No, all I did was open the current bios from my card, edit a few fan speeds and reflash it with the same bios,

Thanks for your help :) I know I am being a PITA
