Nope its an onboard digital processing chip, realtek based but seeing as its not using any shoddy DAC you dont really lose any quality, as its just raw LPCM/DD/DTS
What I'm using nowadays, my old X-Fi is on sale on the MM because this honestly sounds as good/better than the X-Fi with stereo amp did

ATi graphics cards carry their own sound since the past couple series generations, so all you need is the right drivers and a HDMI cable, and you are all set.
