Hi All,

Currently looking at taking my main components and building a 2nd linux/htpc/backup gaming rig (QX6700,Bad Axe2,4gb ram) and going i7 on my main rig.

Due to the fact I want to hook it up to the TV at 1080p via HDMI I wanted to go ATI as it seems the best for HTPC. Due to wanting to have it as a backup gaming machine was thinking 4870 over the 4850 or 4650's.

Games wise WoW, Cod 4, etc.

How noisy is it when gaming compared to say watching a blu-ray or browsing? My 280GTX is quiet most of the time (cpu fan is noisier).

Are there any best manufacturers for cool/quiet over stock.

Cheers

Idle, the card is very very quiet. When you first start your computer it will sound likes its trying to create hurricane katrina the 2nd. I had mine overclocked and set the fan to a constant 40%, i found that very acceptable and it kept it very cool at all times.

Just set the fan speed to about 30-40 via catalyst and you'll be set.

I second damien's point about the startup noise though, 2 seconds of 100% fan is a force of nature.

If space is no issue then go for the arctic cooling twin turbo for after market cooling. Hooked up to the fan speed controller on the card the temps are about the same as as they are on the stock cooler but silent or hooked up via the 7v molex adapter there is ever an so slight (kinda pleasant) wind noise that can only be heard if you wedge your ear against the case but much lower temps (40*C idle 55*C load for me with an OC of 800/1050 over 750/900).

mines silent when its idle. a smidge louder when gaming, and like a rocket on 100% boot error :D

its only loud on boot due to it running a POST test to make sure its working.

this is a 4870 1gb powercolor.

I had to put the fan on mine to 27% for decent balance of idle temp and noise - above 27 and it's too audible and distracting (I run a silent system)

Even so though idle temps were 65+ and load 85~

I got a 260GTX (216) today and WOW, it's so silent and so low on temps (50 idle).

I`ve got absolutely no complaints whatsoever about this 4870. Xpertvision/Palit/Gainward (though Gainward slightly diff fan arrangement), same card.

Edit :D@arc
