Looking for some advice, please read through before posting

(sounds silly to ask this but many many many game forum people dont seem to do this and i have to post after their post to help them understand.)

i know you guys know your stuff though:)

I have my trusty rig which is old but works for me.
Im looking for play the odd game like War thunder and other MMOs, nothing fancy.

Issue is this:

Playing games and game freezes, then lines come down screen and break up picture.

This isnt a death screen.
This isnt a heat issue 68degree avg
This isnt a driver issue, 13.4 updated.
Not a PSU issue, power is good.

I hear its something to do with Clock settings and the 3D to 2D processing, i remember once someone said to increase the cards GPU/clock speeds:confused:

Just would like some help.

Fail that buy a new card but ofc given my older system e8400 ect im limited by options...

thanks for reading, if you have bothered lol

My Gainward 4870GS has just started going the same way, stripped it down & put new thermal paste on the cooler, still made no difference, it's given me good service. I've decided to retire it, will wait & see how AMD's new cards shape out before deciding what to replace it with.

Bake it in the oven ! , i have an old gtx260 that was doing much the same , stripped the cooler off , cleaned the paste off and the pads from the memory , baked it for 15 mins @ gas mark 5 and assembled with new pads and paste, been working perfectly ever since. And yes i was sceptical at first but if it gives new life to the card its worth a try even if it only lasts a few months.

thats a bit too much hassle tbh lol. actually thought u were joking about oven.

What about overclocking it slightly? ie increasing memory clock speeds /GPU clock?? would that fix line freezing issue..

Other than that, whats a cheap £100 ish card to replace it with then, dont fancy forking out just to play a few games but if theres nothin i can do and the cards rubbish then il have it:( (sad given it seems to play some games fine like COH2..)

The 4870 was a lovely card in its day, at that price range your looking at a 7770, or try and get a 7790.nvidia route you want to look no lower then a geforce 650. If I was you though I'd wait to see what amd 's new low end cards are like, plus prices might drop on the older cards. Stock clearance etc

Exactly, wait, will know more about AMD's new cards in a couple of weeks, so there will be bargains around as old stock is cleared & price cuts.
