Fair to assume my old MSI 7950 (title is wrong) is destined for the bin? I've put another (even older) card in and it's looking ok now.

Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement (for dirt cheap) to keep me going til I rebuild next year? Doubt OCUK will have anything suitable so maybe suggest some names I can Google?

Perhaps a used 1060? I'm sure it'll be bottlenecked by that old CPU, you got that CPU running at 4GHz?
 
^^^ That really meets the op's requirements not to mention it would be crippled by the op's pc.


Op, You have one of the best motherboards for overclocking so you should hit 4Ghz easily enough with a decent cooler. I had a E8500 running at 4.5Ghz on a Asus P5Q Pro Turbo. Those were the days, proper overclocking and real gains not just a few hundred Mhz or less like we have today. :(

Try to get a Core 2 Quad Q9450/Q9550/Q9650 for cheap, and some card like Radeon R9-something for cheap, as well.
 
Thanks, I'm going to have a go at overclocking it now. Any decent guides for overclocking what I have?

Found a few but not very clear for a beginner. They mention Vcore? I can't find that, is it CPU voltage?

Just to get started I've changed...

AI overclock tuner to Manual
FSB Frequency to 400
CPU Voltage to 1.2
NB Voltage to 1.15

Haven't booted yet, scared to...

I used to have two MSI Twin Frozr 7950's, passed to my lads, both started artefacting and having occasional shut downs.

Replaced one with a 1050 ti 4gb, the other with a 570 8gb.
