Hi all,new on here.
I have upgraded from 8800 GTS to 4870 512Mb.My 8800 had a single 8 pin power supply but my 4870 has 2X8 pin power supplies.I have a Y adapter which the 8 pin will fit in the 2nd slot on the new card. I have 3 spare 4 pin molex connectors inside my PC which I assume are spares running from the power supply???Do I just plug the 2 molex plugs in to any of these to provide power? Is this safe to do?
I have a 550 watt supply.Thanks in advance.

i thought the 4870 uses a 6pin + 6pin?

what psu are u using?

u can use a molex connector with the adapter to power it.

As said

4870 = 2 x 6 Pin

4870 X2 = 1 x 8 Pin, 1 x 6 Pin

Adapter cables work as u said, just plug one end into Molex, other into card.

Claimed! haha

Yep tis safe

though a better option would be

an

Antec quattro 850w (with the boy racer stripes!) AMAZING psu, with plenty of upgrade potential and power!

Sorry,it's the Y adapter that comes with the card..It fits in the card slot fine.Unsure where to put the 2 molex plugs.
Intel core 2 duo E6400 dual core 2.13Ghz
Vista 32
Asus P5NE 650i sli
4Gb (not all seems to be usable though)
22" Fujitsu Siemens

Why ATI?I'm afraid computers aren't really my thing so may have made bad choice.Had a bit of spare cash basically, and wanted to be ready with a nice PC for Far Cry 2.
4870 went back as damaged in transit.Would you recommend I change for another?(same price though)
Thanks to all who replied,I appreciate iyour time very much.

Another graphics card? or motherboard?

Keep the gfx card you have matey! its awesome! google for benchmarks

As for mobo, keep it in mind for a future upgrade, the nvidia chipset is poo unless you using sli

Wouldn't have a clue how to change mobo.Think it'd frighten me to death to be honest!

Sorry to hijack the thread but I also have a 4870 PSU question. I've just bought the powercolor 1Gb 4870 and need to know if my PSU will handle it. I've got an Enermax EG701AX-VE(W) 24P 600W PSU but it only has 1 6 pin on it. If I get another 6 pin adaptor that's mentioned on here will the PSU be powerful enough to cope?

They're poo even with SLI. I've had ~6 NV chipsets now, and all of them died early or just failed to work. I had one chipset that worked well with SLI - and that was an Intel workstation chipset (not Skulltrail).
