Just got my 4870 yesterday and I'm wondering about what temperature the card feels it should be idling at.

At the moment if I put the fan on 100% and cool it down to lower than 60C, as soon as I put automatic back on it drops the fan speed to under 10% and lets the card heat up to around 67C before it stabilises it by putting the fan to around 23%.

I know I can set it manually to keep it cooler but why would the card be happy to have itself idle at 67C?
 
Load temperatures are ranging high 70s to mid 80s and the fan sets itself to 67% and never seems to go much higher than that. Not too worried 'cos the temps are within range, but I'm just curious why it seems happy to leave the idle temperature so high.

The temps are probably higher cos I had to put in a new power supply and it has a lot more spare leads than my old one and the case is somewhat crowded. Also, the gfx card doesn't vent the air out the back.
 
The reasons are likely to make a substantial difference, especially since these days most cards push the air out through the back of the case. Your temps are acceptable though. When I bought mine the default fan speed was 27% which would result in temps (winter time) around 80 - 90 or even beyond. So I just set it to 32% - brings it back down to around 50C and this is in summer time. Just goes to show a few % change can make all the difference. Simple reason is they are designed to be able to handle these temps quite easily and I can assure you my card is bound to get a lot hotter than yours!:D
 
Mine 4870x2 gets fairly hot running things like E:TW, hits around 90 on full load and on about 55% fan power. I do get concerned about them though, especially if it automatically overides my settings and cranks it up to keep it below around 95 degrees.

I do get a bit confused though as when it is using crossfire, one GPU tends to be way more active and thus hotter than the other, they never seem to spread the load evenly.

I know the ATI's do get hot, but it doesn't stop me worrying when I have to put the fans to 40% to keep it below 50degs at idle. Plus its real noisy with the fans about about 50%!!!

Looks like the ambient temperature in the case is just a bit too high, but I suppose these things will happen when you dare upgrade a Dell system.

Anyway, does anybody have one of those cheap system exhausts? Do they actually have any impact? They're only a few quid so I'll try anyway though it'd be good to know what to expect.
 
y do people care about the noise from the fan? when ure gaming u cant hear it. i ALWAYS have my xfx 4850 at 100% fan speed, in a antec 300 case. i get 36C idle
 
Right, well I have reverted to the 9.6 drivers and my temps have dropped dramatically, instead of being around 90-95 on Empire:TW, they now hover around 70-75 degrees. Don't know what the hell is up with those 9.7 drivers though, no improvement in performance apart from high temps.

Ure? :confused: That's the worst spelling of 'your' I've ever come across.

Also, go up, if you knew what you were talking about, you'd know that the GPUs used in 4800s (RV770) are able to take high temperatures, they're designed to.

Or are you suddenly an internet profession that knows more about ATi's GPUs than they do themselves?
