4870 X2 Issues need advice...

Well i bought a 4870 X2 (Gainward) last year from overclockers.

For some reason a lot of games a play wont run properly.

For example,

I recently bought Empire Total War, and can only play it in window mode, when in full screen the game flickers (i really don't know how to describe it other than that) continuously.

As well when i play RuneScape (laugh if you must) the graphics drivers will randomly fail on occasion and then reboot, this is just a simple jave game i don't understand it.

Not only that when i first installed it both GPU's were running, now however when ever i use anything my second GPU according to the CCC will always display 0% activity, despite the fact im running dual monitors, being on a game msn, even two games at the same time, it always displays as 0%.

It has been like this for a while, and i thought i would wait through a couple of CCC newer versions but still no success.

I don't know where to contact OC for a replacement as i've had it under a year or if anyone knows a fix.

Any help/advice would be appreciated thanks.

850 Watt Hiper Power Supply
8GB Geil 8500 RAM
Asus Maximus II Formula Motherboard
Intel Q9550 @ 2.83 (Stock)
Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB hard drive
Pro Freezer 7 whatever its called cooler lol.

Im using the latest drivers and the latest CCC. Its been like this for months now.

try reverting back to the drivers that came on CD and see if the latest drivers are causing issues>

i say this because my Sapphire 4870X2 had temp issues with certain drivers causing me artifacts.

8.12 = No Issues
9.1 = Issues
9.3 = No Issues

Whats the cards idle and load temps?

I have loads of issues with my X2 as well, mainly due to shadows and I can't run wow in windowed mode or it crashes, dunnon why.

just updated to 9.3, gonna start praying that fixed some of the problems

Have you set your catalyst A.I. to advanced? That may help. You certainly need to get those temps down. Is yours the overclocked version? If so try dropping the clocks down a little.

Nope the normal version, nothing is over clockers, and yes i am in advanced mode the default fan speed is 27% at which my card hits in the low 90's when idle so ive addressed the issue as much as i am willing for noise.
My whole system is at stock speeds, im starting to think i might send it off, as it shouldnt be like it is.

this happened to me when i upgraded to 9.2 and also in 9.3 i can no longer play wow in windowed mode or whole system hangs works fine in full screen.

i was on 8.12 before.

Not sure on load, but idle it's 80 degrees at 35% fan speed. So im gussing load it will be in the high 90's

It's surprising how different versions have such different temps. My HIS 4870 X2 at 35% would give not much more than 50C on idle. I haven't even changed profiles, mind you I couldn't get the profiles to work anyway.

If I were you I'd adjust your profile in profile manager and set the clocks to very low settings for 2d applications. You should then get very, very good temps. Or consider a third party cooler which I appreciate kind of defeats the object.

Yes, although they are beasts of graphics cards they are noisey as a hungry hell cat in a tornado.

I've decided i will send it back for a replacment, can't see the point of a 3rd party cooler of one of my GPU's doesnt even work. Later on this year im considering water cooling anyway so that should solve most problems with heat.

Atm however im convinced i have a faulty graphics card, which is pretty annoying seeing on only just got back 4 of my 8gb of ram back from repair the other day lol. Two faults in one build *sigh*

Good luck sending it back to OCUK mate. I had problems with my X2 and sent it back to OCUK and they said it was fine and sent it back to me, but i tried it in more than one PC and it certainly wasn't.
In the end i sold it and got a 280, then a 295 (NV's drivers are so much better).

OCUK are OK for buying stuff, but when you have a problem they are really poor... on Google shopping they have 2 out of 5 stars from over 250 reviews, which is extremely bad.
