hey all, so i picked up a 4870 x2 the other day for my dads gaming rig. for £20 it was rude not to. but theres some things id like to know about it.
Can it run in crossfire with his single 4870 card?

because when hes ran it in crossfire, theres loads of random freezes and the x2 gets boiling hotto the point where it is too hot to touch.

when he runs the 4870x2 on its own, glitches appear whenever he runs a game (diablo 3 for example)
can anyone explain this? are there specific drivers that allow the 4870 x2 to work well in crossfire with a standard 4870?
its an asus 4870x2 and the 4870 single card is a HIS.
thanks!

Sounds to me like the "new" GPU is on it's way out.......just a gut feeling. If you get artifacts when you are using it as a single GPU that's not a good sign :(

This. Sounds like you got a dud 4870X2. It can run perfectly crossfired with a 4850/70/90/50X2/70X2.

What power supply does he have?

I would imagine running the 4870X2 + 4870 together would push the limits of the PSU? Just stick with the 4870X2 on it's own.

yeah tried that, still getting artifacts in the game. very worrying. he is running it in a nzxt gamma m59 case, so airflow isnt the best either. hopefully new thermal paste will sort out the gpu. thanks!

the 4870s suffered with too low speed fan profiles,
What fan speed are you using and what are the vrms, memory and core temps when gaming?

Check using gpu-z,
gpu temp 1 = disp io
gpu temp 2 = mem io
gpu temp 3 = shader
vreg = vrm

is the card a 3xfan or single fan?
You can use afterburner to make a custom profile, Or use ccc for a manual fan.

But you need to check what the fan profile is at the moment and the temps of all the sensors I mentioned..

single fan mate, will do the manual fan for now to see if problems still tjhere. we just couldnt find whereabouts in ccc the option was.

I had a 4870 untill earlier this year and it then started getting artifacting/corruption in various games sometimes even blue screening my pc. I stopped gaming and just used my pc for browsing. It lasted maybe 3 weeks untill the 4870x2 died completely.

A great card but does look like you bought one on its way out..........at least £20 wasn`t too damaging to your pocket :)

I still have my old 4870x2 I use it as a spare at the minute. About 6 months ago I did replace the TIM with some mx4 it really helped drop the temps under load. The only graphical problems I had was when I tired to overclock would often blue screen then.
