4870 x2 replacement advice

Hello all,

I always end up here for great advice when I come to upgrade components on my gaming rig. And the time has come again. With more and more games being DX11, I would like to upgrade my GPU with a DX11 card.

I lucked in a few years ago and picked up a HD 4870 x2...although slightly noisy under load and a bit power hungry, it rocked for performance. I have held off buying a new card cos I don't seem to get much of a performance hike from my existing card (unless I go for the uber 6990!!

I just saw the baner advertising the new 6870 x2....so, being a fan of the 2 GPU in one card solution....is this a good solution for me? Will I see a decent performance hike, or is there a better solution.

Really appreciate any input. Thanks.

p.s. mobo and PSu are sli ready and can cope with this card and more.

If it's any help, I went from a 4870X2 to an overclocked gtx480 and although on paper it wouldn't seem to look like a worthwhile move, in reality it most definitely was. So, moving up to a 6870X2 should easily be worth it. Also, crossfire scaling is better with the 6000 series v the 4000 cards.

They did, yes, thanks.

So much so, I have taken the plunge and bought 2x6950 2gb cards...my first multi GPU experience.

Thanks for the input and pointers all.

lol. that's true, I am already corssfired...just not in 2 physically differing cards....that is the new bit!!

I have gone for the HIS ATI Radeon HD 6950 IceQ X Turbo 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card. Only £10 cheaper than the Saphirre version, but hey, £10 is £10....I can have a Starbucks Latte and Cookie for that!!

They arrive tomorrow so cannot wait to see how they do...the benchmarks (thanks for links) certainly point to much better performance in the games I play regularly...

but the toxic comes with dual bios with one being a modified bios, this modified bios may unlock the shaders so you basically have a 6970(with the toxic you don't have to flash the bios just flick a switch on the graphics card) for the fraction of the price(especially now with the prices of 6970 being artifically high, think they're higher than they were at launch) tho like with the gen1 6950(i.e. before amd moved to stop the 'flash ability') its all down to luck. I'm hoping if I do go for them that they unlockable :)

Hello All!!

Well, they shipped my order before I could change it...but that is not an issue. The cards turned up today. I have instaleld them (no issues there at all!!), the drivers are installed and in the quick 5 mins I had to test, the results astounded me!!

BFBC2 was running at 41 fps...now with my new cards, with all details maxed out, I am getting 138fps.....WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!

I am so impressed.....next game is Crysis 2, but am having to wait to update to DX11 and hig texture pack....life is good!!

Thanks all for your help...be well and good gaming to you all!
