The 4870x2 is better in most games. If you can afford it and have a suitable motherboard, then 2 4890s in Crossfire is the way to go! ;)

What is the argument for single cards these days?

Multiple GPUs do not have any real problems, and nearly all new games gain a big boost from Crossfire/SLi.

If you had £350 and you wanted a graphics card but were trying to be more senisble than just whacking it on the most expensive card what would you buy? (not 2 cards)

With £350, I'd get a GTX295. But that kind of money just isn't sensible. Realistically, the only game that needs it is Crysis. Everything else runs fine at 1920x1200 or below with something of HD4890 comparative performance.

really bad input lag when vsync is turned on

Hmm...

I've had a number of SLi and Crossfire setups and always have V-Sync switched on. Not once have I experienced input lag due to having multiple GPUs.

Are you sure you aren't basing your view on outdated information?

I prefer a single GPU based high-end graphics card over a dual-GPU based solution, that doesn't mean though that things have improved over the years like with amd, but single is better

graphics cards are ment to make game player more enjoyable! these multiple GPU's are the most powerful but they really shouldnt lack in input latency! or anything for that matter that a mid range single gpu can do easily

I've had dual 3870s, a 9800GX2 and an HD4870X2. This is the first time I've ever heard input lag mentioned with regard to multi-GPU setups, and it certainly isn't a problem I've ever had.

The 4870X2 was a great card.

so on the 4870x2 some are saying you get input lag some are saying you dont, could this be down to a driver issue or faulty cards?

so the other recommendations are the 4890 or the 285
which card would give you more fps in games say like Arma 2

at the moment i have a 4870 512mb and the fps in Arma 2 isnt that great,if i was to crossfire would that give me input lag the same as 4870x2.

I personally won't touch any form of dual GPU graphics because you read about too many people claiming better consistency with a single GPU along with this 'micro stutter' phenomenon and game incompatible with dual GPU, thus a waste of money on the 2nd card. Yes, there are people who have 'no problems' with the SLI/Xfire/dual GPU card but I prefer the piece of mind single GPU solution boasts. Anyway, at 1920x1080, multi GPU is pointless, yet to find anything my setup can't crunch through with considerable ease.

One problem with what people claim on forums is that you mostly only hear about the minority when it comes to problem issues. People don't come on a forum on avg to praise how trouble free there computing is.

There is not one single piece of hardware or software around the world that someone somewhere is not having problems with of some sort.

The BBC had 400 letters of complaint sent in after an airing of a new show. Guess how many of the 15 million happy viewers sent in letters of praise.

How often do people get praised after a good day work in relation to how often that something is said when they screw things up.
