it should be faster/better than the 3870x2
I think it would. I'm sure there is micro-stuttering with the 38-- series cards but very little with the new ATI cards.
If you can afford it then maybe buy a 4870, try it and if it holds out better than your X2 3870, then keep the card (4870) and then sell the X2 card?.

That's the average across benchmarks of various games. At your res, the 4870 beats the 3870x2 by around 10 FPS average without AA, and around 15 FPS with AA.
