4870x2 Crossfire Driver?

After having a nightmare with overheating, with my 4870x2 fitted with an Accelero cooler i decided to try the stock cooler again and now i have no heat problems at all! Probably due to my case, the Silverstone Fortress 2 which was designed for use with graphics that have exhausts on them.. but i didn't know that until recently after reading another post on here.

But for as long as i can remember I have also been having a problem with TF2 where i get this annoying stuttering as well as this freezing that would happen at random times for about half a second or more. Oh and god awful fps!

Last week i decided to go back to CCC 10.4 and the stuttering and freezing has completely gone and my fps is superb :D

I now have 2 4870x2's in crossfire, temps are good, framerates are superb .... then i tried running Crysis 2 and i seem to be getting very similar problems to what TF2 was giving me with the latest drivers

Its not so much freezing, more like... as i walk the game slows down for half a second then catches up to itself, but does this constantly. It does this on all settings, High - Ultra .... unless i disable crossfire :(

Its a pity because im actually getting pretty playable fps in Ultra... around 40-50

Does anyone know of a driver which works well with both new and old games or am I going to have to set up a dual boot system with different graphics drivers?

Cheers

Have you installed the latest application profiles?

Also there was an issue with crossfire and Crysis 2 when it first came out and not sure if it was addressed by the 10.4 drivers or later on.

A possible fix that I remember worked for some was to rename the Crysis2.exe to bioshock2.exe so that the profile for that game was used instead.

This might work and save you having to run a dual boot config.

No, I tried the Bioshock thing a while back, tried it again yesterday but i used RadeonPro to do it because i have the Steam version.

It's so annoying that ATI seem to have neglected older cards with their newer drivers.

i had this problem with GTA IV, MW2, and several other games.

To resolve it i had to disable a service in Msconfig...windows event logger or something..

Maybe this is the issue?

I've just installed Windows 7 to a new drive, im gonna try the new drivers on it again.

The problem is that I like playing TF2 but with the new drivers its pretty much unplayable.

Nope! Crysis 2 still does the same thing.... but now im wondering whether the problem could be down to my power supply.

When im playing there's one fan that seems to be getting noisier than all the rest and I think its the psu.

I just ran the eXtreme Power Supply Calculator and its saying that I need a 900w psu  .....I have currently have 750w

Bugger :(

I would certainly up your psu since you're running two 4870X2's. When I had mine, in some instances including everything on my rig I could draw close to around 600watts (and I only had one of them).

That's good to hear, though I do recommend that you consider a new psu. :) You might be ok with what you have but it does sound a bit near the knuckle to me.

Just an idea but check the gpu cooler fans for dust build up, my bro had same kind of issue where his gpu would over heat and shut down, open fan casing and one fan had an almighty build up causing fan to overwork/under perform, cleaned it out and good as new

I don't know what was causing the jerking before because using the newest driver is fine now.

I have been playing TF2 with 2 4870x2's for hours without problems.

Can't say the same for Crysis 2, the psu fan goes insane when i load it up, even with one 4870x2 so im gonna get a new psu this week hopefully.

4870x2's are clean, I only put the stock coolers back on in the last 2 weeks and they rarely get over 60 degrees. Even running Crysis 2 on Ultra it doesn't get past 70.
