4870x2 in PCI-E 1

Thats the equivalent of x8 PCI-e to each card... you will start to hit the bus bandwidth limitations but only very minor... maybe 5% loss when pushed to extreme.

Bit off topic.

But would it be risking it placing a 4870X2 in my rig with only a Corsair HX520W to power it?

lol I'm like a crash test dummy

Look out for my spec me a new psu thread, I trust the corsair's protection circuits will prevent damage to my cpu etc?

I did a test with my 4870 in a v1.0a mobo and then a v2.0 mobo - all other components exactly the same - same fsb/clock - less than 4% difference in benchmarks.

1.1 or 1.0a?

I'm intending to buy one of these cards to go in my Asus P5W64 which is PCI-E 1.0a. Bad idea?

Cool, although 4870x2 might multiply that difference.
