Maybe one of the other threads would be adequate for this, but I thought this might be a good place to post for people that own the card.

Thoughts/issues so far...

1. One of my cores is running idle at 82c, the other at 60c. Not sure this is healthy?

2. Is it normal for device manager to show two lots of 'ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2' ?

3. Should I be seeing a crossfire section in the catalyst menu tree? Or does this show for multi card set-ups only?

4. I've not been able to install the latest 8.7 drivers from the ATI site. The catalyst manager installs, but the driver doesn't. I can install the driver supplied with the CD and the 8.8 beta however. I'm on vista 64.

5. Can someone with this card that also has 'The Witcher' and can run at 2560x1600 (must be someone!)do me a huge favour and tell me what fps they get in the middle of the trade district area where there are loads of streets/buildings in view. I'm getting around 30-40 fps here. Going from the reviews/previews around the web, reports show an fps of 70 in this game, although they may not have tested in this particular portion of the game.

Was having crazy artifacting issues on my card but somehow they have gone away - I think it was a driver issue perhaps caused by the fan not spinning up properly or clock speeds not getting set correctly..either way it's seemed to resolve itself - I hope!

Would appreciate it if anyone else can post their Furmark benchmarks (as it seems GPU heavy) to confirm that my card is working correctly:

Furmark v1.4 Fullscreen
Score: 5846
FPS Min:87
FPS Max:132
FPS Avg:98
Time: 60000ms
Res: 1280x1024 / MSAA: 0x
Renderer: ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2
Active GPUs: 2
Drivers: 5.2.3790.1830 - Catalyst 0
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.4Ghz
CPU Speed: 2400MHz

Windows XP X64 Edition.

Cheers!

PW

uh oh, I get this:

Furmark v1.4 Fullscreen
Score: 3271
FPS Min:21
FPS Max:81
FPS Avg:55
Time: 60000ms
Res: 1280x1024 / MSAA: 0x
Renderer: ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2
Active GPUs: 2
Drivers: Unknown version
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.4Ghz
CPU Speed: 3825MHz (actually 3.4Ghz)

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (64)

Bit better with CD drivers in terms of avg and max FPS, but min fps is still dodgy:

Furmark v1.4 Fullscreen
Score: 5991
FPS Min:29
FPS Max131
FPS Avg:100
Time: 60000ms
Res: 1280x1024 / MSAA: 0x
Renderer: ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2
Active GPUs: 2
Drivers: Unknown version
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.4Ghz
CPU Speed: 3825MHz (actually 3.4Ghz)
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (64)

although GPUZ still reports one core in use only

Have any of you managed to do any Witcher tests? For me, it's no quicker than my 8800gtx and I'm having to play in 1920x1200 as I did with the gtx.
According to the reviews, this card should be smashing through this at 2560x1600, everything on max at 70 odd fps.
I can only think it could be a driver problem - but then again, what drivers did the review sites use?
edit - If I have two instances of gpuz running, one for each core, it looks like one gpu is about 40% load in game, and the other about 10% or less. I'm guessing this might explain why it seems to be running with the performance of a single 4870 card.

Well - can only hope the next driver revision sorts this out.

Will try some different games/tests tomorrow.

Not got that one mate, but thought I'd add something positive to this thread before I go to sleep.
Guru3d reported an fps of 88 in the devil may cry 4 benchmark @ 2560x1600 with 8xAA.
I tried this with same settings and got an average of 114 fps across the four tests.

Also tried Bioshock out today and that worked like a charm (70/80 fps).
Can only assume reason for low fps in the particular witcher levels i was trying is down to cpu being taxed too heavily.

quick note on the drivers - i've checked the .inf files:

8.8 beta is version 8.520.2 last updated 22/07/08

Drivers on HIS CD and website are version 8.520.0 last updated 08/07/08.

So 8.8 betas are most recent, and the ones I'm now using again. Furmark takes a hit with this version but games are running great and that's the main thing.
