So looking back at my old purchases i notice i bought my 4870x2 from overclockers on the 12th of august 2008 for the princely sum of £325!

i can tell by the noise and heat coming off it that these days its having a bit more trouble! do you reckon its worth the upgrade considering that the 6870 is only ~£200?

Cheers

Try cleaning it out.

Alternatively sell it to fund an upgrade, but bear in mind what arc@css has just said. Better to get something from the 69xx series when it comes out, or a 480gtx otherwise you are just throwing money away for no real gain.

Down grade yes.

But upgrade interms of power usage, heat and noise reductions... plus the whole no more crossfire driver issues.

If you dont mind a performace downgrade, and can get a fair price for the 4870x2... I dont think its that bad.... however... in saying that you get all the above and keep your performance with a 5870.

However, I would wait for the higher end 6000 series gpus, before making a purchase, thats of course if you want to spend over 250 maybe 300....

Best thing for you maybe is to just hang on to the 4870x2. Thats still a beefy card.

Fine, its hot, uses lots of juice, is noisey and lacks dx11, but its still got plenty of milage in it.

Get a fair price for it, and then maybe... you can justify an upgrade.

Does it struggle with any games your playing?

Go for cleaning it first. I knocked 15 degrees and a lot of fan noise of my 4890 by removing the plastic cover and dusting the heatsink with a paint brush. It'd only been in the case for 9 months, 4 of them in a filtered case so I was quite surprised by the amount of insulating dust it had captured.

I'd personally want a big increase in performance if I were to upgrade.

cheers for the replies! its not really having too many issues with games, it was having a little bit of difficulty with fallout vegas, but everything was maxed.

i think i will do as you say and wait for the 69xx series to come out and give my current card a clean!

My 4870x2 was running hot so i got an accelo exetreme cooler on it and now it's totally silent and highest temps are 50C they was over 90C before they tend to need blasting out every 2 months that's the reason i upgraded the fan and im in the same boat i want to upgrade forDX11 but srsly not worth it at the moment i might not even get 6970 since nothing has stressed my card yet.
