Bit of an odd one

I installed my EK 4870x2 waterblock a few weeks ago and idle temps dropped from 50/60s to low / mid 30s - and load (after a heavy gaming session) used to regularly hit 100 - now (in most games / benches) tops out at mid 60s.

All was fine until this weekend I had my first decent session on COD5 W@W and as soon as the temps (monitored by Everest and displayed on my G15 LCD) hit 70 the game starts to artifact - by 74 the screen is filled and the game completely unplayable and then lock up and or restart :(

I jumped back into COD4 and the game never hits over mid 60s (although there is a very small amount of artifacting in some textures).

3DM06 (even run at 1920 x 1200 with all the rendering and AA I can throw at it) it never goes over mid 50s. Same with "into the pink" and "Furmark" - maxxed out never goes over mid 50s.

So the problem only seems to be in COD5 (and to a lesser degree in COD4) - but why at (relatively) low temps compared to what I had on air without a problem?

I tried to take some screenies, but even in the middle of the worst artifacting the screenies coe out fine

It has been suggested that this is the GFX RAM overheating ?

Ill look at removing, checking, and reseating the cover - where is the RAM ?

Will I need to replace the thermal pads ?

Also any other thoughts / advise would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

What are your VRM temps like? I know that when i game without my fans turned up and my case side door secured the temps can get really hot with one of my graphics card (it's an issue with the thermal pads). This can then result in instability. Also, how stable is CPU and when was the last time you primed it?

Hi

Ill check the VRM temps

The CPU is rock solid at 3.6 - Ive not primed for a while - again I can try this

Can you replace the pads with paste or am i better stick (no pun intended) with the thermal pads ?

Cheers

Here they are:

You might also want to try gaming with your side cover off and a decent fan blowing on your 4870 whilst playing COD5 to rule out high temperatures..

They look like the ones numbered 2,4,5 and 6 on the EK sheet and they already have pads on - I might try "slightly" tightening the block screws.

Ill monitor the VRM temps tonight - but the GPU definately hit trouble around the 70 mark

Cheers again

I think its either your ram or vrm overheating.

I think you need to remount your waterblock anyway cause your temps look hot to me.

I know I only have a 4870 my card core temp maxes out at 43C after hours of gaming.

My vrm are a bit more bothersome though and used to hit 100C.

I do have the CPU and GFX in the same loop and the GFX temps have drastically reduced.

I only ever really monitored the GPU temps - ill take a look at the VRM and RAM temps later

Ive also ordered some new thermal pads and paste for the re-seat :S

I had this problem, infact mine would also bsod. Have a look at the fitting instructions for the XSPC block on their website. They recommended using paste on the memory and the chip in between the GPU's. I sorted mine after re-seating it.

Thanks

So which of these are VRM / Memory ? :S

Would slapping some thermal pads on here help ?

And on the rear there are some that are exposed - do these need loking at ?

All the bits you circled above are capacitors and don't need thermal pads on.

The back of your card looks fine.

Lol Ta ( thats what I thoughts )

I was a bit confused when IanRich said the things to the right of the box on the drawing by beh* - but I see what he means now :)

Mine all have pads on :

I think I may have found the "issue" - Ill have a better look this evening - but another quick Q -

Which of the Everest readings is what is commonly regarded as the "GFX Temperature" ?
