4870x2 when bottlenecked, how much performance loss?

getting a new computer with a Q6600, and a 4870x2. I know the 2.4 quad core wont stop bottleneck, but how much performance will I lose? For ease, tell me how many fps I will lose in crysis (highest settings, high resolution).

While @ stock the Q6600 will bottleneck your 4870X2 you can easily clock it to 3.2Ghz and run with those speeds 24/7. You can easily clock it at much higher speeds but that depends on various factors like mobo and ram and cpu itself.
At what resolution do go game btw?

In certain games a q9550 was still bottle necking a x2 when running at 4ghz so i think whatever you get your q6600 clocks to it will still be the bottleneck but if you get it to 3ghz the performance will still be great so no matter.

all depends on the game, but it should be fairly minor. o/cing to 3ghz ish should elminate it completely

3Ghz will easly bottleneck the X2.

For example in Warhead with my 280 at default going from a Q9450 @ 3ghz to a E8500 @ 3.9 increased the min by 10 FPS and thats at 1920x1200. DX9 all Enth apart from shadows and post on gamer.

It's allmost impossible to say what FPS you will get at the highest settings, but its all relative anyway.
No CPU-GPU combo will play Crysis smoothly at the highest settings so i wouldn't worry.

Mine manages to play it smoothly at the above settings.

Hello jigger, I am not quite sure why you say that to be honest. I can play Crysis on the "Very High" setting at a resolution of 1920x1200 using an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 overclocked to 3.5GHz, a ATI Radeon 4870 1024MB and 4GB of memory. Admdetelly, it's not silky smooth but it's defiantly playable without a doubt. It certainly isn't joggy enough to warrant reducing some of the settings. :)

Fair play guys, but it's all down what poeple consider a playable frame rate, and for me crysis at its highest settings is miles from playable.

I think it was legion that did a review that showed little performance increase from the X2 over 3.3ghz it was something like only 5fps better with the oc to 4ghz. I have clocked mine (q9450) to 3.2 ram stops me going any further but i am happy with the performance i get and don't worry about bottlenecking much. Other way i look at it when i upgrade in a couple of years i will get a little performance boost off it :).

Have a read of this. It should answer your question. It's quite a good article actually and they have also done one for the GTX280 now.

^^ This is true, sorry forgot where, but earlier today an a Q9550 was bottlenecking a 4870x2 until at res 2560 with 4xAA or something ridiculous like that.

Having just read the review, i can hire my rig out for Frag parties, Lan parties and barmitzvars :D

It tells us all what we already know, the faster your CPU the better the gaming experience.

I'm playing Crisis on my E8600 @ 4.3Ghz and 4870x2 at the "very high" settings at 1920 x 1200. It played pretty smoothly initially but seemed more sluggish the more I played. I'm now on the part where the huge alien is on the deck of the ship and my pc just locks up for 5-30 seconds at a time. Even dropping down to 1400x900 it still does it. The cpu goes under full load.
