4870x2

Just had a quick google search and it seems the 4870 x 2 is around the level of a 5870, although the 5870 edges it in some of the tests The 5870 is about equal to the 6950 in the current AMD lineup.

Still a competent card but of course is noisy and doesn't feature DX11.

So possible upgrades would be a 6950 flashed to 6970, or a 6970 or a 6990.

To be honest I don't see much point in either of the 6950 or 6970 as it's not enough of a jump but if you have a spare £400+ then maybe the 6990 would be worth a shot.

A GTX 480/580 would be an upgrade but then I'm still not sure if it'd be worth it. I like to see at least double the performance between upgrades.

Edit: Tri-fire works but the third 4870 doesn't give good scaling by what I've read. Maybe 60% of the total power of the card.

picked the 4870x2 up for £45

my system is watercooled and i have 2x EK gpu blocks so i can add them to the card i also have some ram sinks for the ram and regs

so for that price it cant be beat.

£45! Bargain. Up until recently I had one of these, was one of the better cards I have used. Water cooling should really produce some great temps. :)

yeh wonder what speeds i can crank it upto on water ?

Hmm I'm not sure, I remember seeing one or two on the forum that went down the water cooling route. Compared to air cooling I think you should find the gains at the very least a reasonable improvement.

Could always grab another and quadfire! :D

my board is a p55 deluxe

has x16 x16 x4 slots

in CF its x8 x8 x4

what would the slots run at with a 4870x2 in slot 1 and the 4870 in slot 2 ?

I have mine at 810/1075 thats with a gainward glh which has a big 2 slot heatpipe and fan cooler . so add a little to that ;). Still a good card .

Even so i'm just about to buy 2 6950's . Need the vram for cliffs of dover :D

I have the same graphics setup at the moment 4870x2 with extream cooler and a single 4870 in trifire. Can play must games full whack even crysis warhead sits at average 50+ avg fps with 4xaa and all enthusist settings at 1920x1200. And F1 2010 everthing up full whack gets 93fps in the benchmark

But now I'm ready for an upgrade bought another 2 1920 x 1200 samsung monitors gonna give eyefinity a go with a 6990 and a 6970.

I upgraded from a 4870x2 to a GTX570. The NVIDIA is definitely faster in games by a few FPS, more consistent FPS, and gone is all the micro-stutter. So I think its worth upgrading to a single card just for those benefits. For £45 it really was a bargain you got!
