Hey all,

Dont want to sound a pain, im guessing you get this question a lot!:P Im about to build a new gaming rig, and im stuck on wether to go for the 5770 or the 4890.. (both same price)

Here are my specs

Monitor
19" Samsung Syncmaster 932gw - Native resolution 1440 x 900

System Specs
Intel Core i5 750 2.66Ghz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - OEM
MSI P55-GD65 Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard
Geil Ultra Series 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-17000 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit
Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK)
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM
Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme Rev. C CPU Cooler
Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black
Corsair Airflow Dual-Channel Fan
Sony Optiarc AD-7241S 24x DVD±RW SATA Lightscribe Optical Drive

I have done some research and im slightly leaning towards the 4890 atm, simply because it seems to perform a lot better than the 5770....

But the 5770 is more future proof...and i dont know wether the 5770 would perform just as good as the 4890 in 1440 x 900...

Help! :p

But the 5770 is more future proof

You don't know that. No one does. We don't know what will happen in the future, all we can do is look at the past and make an educated prediction. If a sensible person did this then they'd realise that cards made years ago will still play games being released today even though they're not DX10 compatible. Going by that, you will be able to play games years from now on the HD 4890 in DX10, probably still at the highest settings possible. Then there's the fact that the HD 5770 has been tested to show that its performance in DX11 isn't very good at all so you'd probably be better off playing games in DX10 on high settings than DX11 on low.

The HD 4890 out performs the 5770 on DX10.

Seems to me that saying the 5770 is more future proof is pretty foolish thing to do tbh.

(I think the sensible thing to do is buy a 4890 btw :P)

All the advice I can give is that I have a 5770, and it is smooth as silk on all recent games at 1920x1080, maxed out with 4xAA. So at your resolution it would perform flawlessly. The 4890 is faster, sometimes by as much as 20 frames, but you wouldn't see this in reality in almost all games. The big advantage of the 5770 is that it runs super cool (50c max in games), and uses very low wattage compared to 4xxx cards. It's swings and roundabouts really, and whatever you choose you will get fantastic performance for your money :)

Personaly running at your screen resolution of 1440 x 900 i would go for the 5770 ( with the thought of getting another to crossfire at a later date ) you are right 5770 is in a way more future proof but as said not gr8 in dx11 on its own ,4890 no dx11 but a gd dx10 card , but like i said if your were thinking of going down the crossfire road then 5770 and dx11 is the way to go.

I think it's too early to buy a card in this price range with DX 11 in mind. If you really want a good future proof card, you'll either have to pay more money or wait a while.

like arctine says, just wait.. i hope you're a patient man. wait till the gt300/Fermi comes out and blows everything out the water. then ATI will probably have to lower their prices, and you'll be able to pick up a HD 5890 (guarantee there's going to be one) or 2 5870s in crossfire. i think those could be 'da bomb'

At 1440x900 the difference between a 4890 and 5770 would be virtually indistinguisable and the benefits of having a, smaller, cooler, newest tech card would make it the logical choice.

Personally, with a system like the one you're building, I'd invest in a new screen.

i would go for 4890 if you intend to upgrade your monitor, otherwise a 5770 can handle your resolution at no problem

dx10 is already becoming extinct. dont compare your cards to those and go for one for that. most cards can handle newer games these days, so the difference then comes down to the speed you're playing it at. i havent even heard of the 5770 until now, but lower cards are never good, no matter what you say. they'll cripple within a few months. unless you're talking about a 5850, then go for it, those are good underdog cards, will last you too, as to me they sound like the 8800gt's. great performance at low prices, and will handle most things for the next 3/4 of a year or so. great overclockers too. btw my opinion of lower lower cards are bad only due to geforece (under 58xx series). so if you truly are talking about HD 57xx well, i shouldnt be here, so bye
